broken diesel to a I6 300

Would it be crazy to swap out a 5 speed I6 300 into my 1989 F450?

It has 4.69 or whatever gears in the dually rear. Also it is a regular cab Flat bed. I don't know what all this weights. But I thought this would get better mileage.

Anyone?

I'd do it. Ford put the 300 in F600s for a long time, and they moved them around pretty good.

I'd love to have your F450

Thanks. Did they really put the 300 in the F600. That would be very interesting. In 1989 the only two engines available was the 460 or the 7.3LD. So as far as engine mounts I don't know. Was thinking a 5.8L would work better. I don't know but I sure do like the idea of a 95 or so year model with fuel injection and a ZF 5 speed with overdrive in the F450. I can haul anything with it. I am gonna take the 4.6's out of the BIG HOSS of a rear end and put in some 3.73's or 3.55's.

I know they did in the 60s-70s. I don't know about the 80's f600s

I'd leave those rear end gears in there. It would make it a lot easier for the 300 to move an F-450.

Yea but I can't go 65mph without rapping it out. I am not looking for the quickest machine, just a tough one that can atleast go 65 mph.

the size tire is going to come into effect to what size ratio you can run. I don't know much about an f450 so I don't know which rearend you have under there. What I would do is find that out and then see which gears are available. Also is it 2wd or 4wd? I think a 300 would be sweet in that truck, you could get a zf tranny to go with it. Mine is a 95 f150, m50d with an 8.8 rear with 3.55's and I don't wanna drive 65 at all, it's like everytime I look at my gas gauge the needle has gone down some, my fuel economy sucks though.

you have a F150, OD trans and 3.55s and get bad milage at 65? I dont START getting good milage untill 60-65.

It should just be ticking along at a little bit over idle with 3.55's and a M50d, unless its climbing a hill.
I never even use the OD gear untill about 50-55. but I'm running a carb, maybe that where the better gas milage comes from. 12mpg hauling or towing in city traffic, 14mpg running empty in city traffic, 16mpg @ 70-80mph on the highway

This F450 came with the 4.68 gears. It is the Dana 80 DRW axle with disc brakes. Yea I thought about just getting a 6 and putting a ZF behind it. I think that would make for one heck of a work truck.

What all can I do to the 6 to get torque close to 400 ft/lbs?

Wowwa alot to get 400 ft lb torque lol. My best recommendation is search for col. flashman about his "built 300 six" post. He has a very streetable 300 hp 400 ftlb torque 6 but, it definetly aint cheap and a 460 may be better suited in my mind but, i guess it depends on what you want and why you want it.
