Man where to look next. What i got is a 78 ford f-100 with a 302/V8/5.0 liter with a 2bbl carb.(motorcraft) My problem is. New 1000 Amp. battery new wires,plugs rotor and cap. New fuel filter and a full tank of gas. But she just won't turnover. I can smell gas from carb. when i try turning over and it floods out. but she's cranking but still won't kick over. Would she still crank if coil was bad? and if so how could i check to see. I just am at a total loss on what direction to go with this.

 

yes it will crank with a bad coil. how old is the coil, is it leaking oil. If you shake the duraspark coil, can you hear oil sloshing around? If it is leaking or you don't hear oil its bad. (they can be bad even if they do this, but if they don't, it DEFINATLY is bad)

a duraspark module will not fire below 11 volts. not ussually a problem with a new battery, but check it with a meter. old batterys can sometimes spin an engine over fast enough but the system voltage drops so much the module won't fire.

Is the module grounded to the distibutor?
Is the harness in good shape.

is the coil clip cracked or broken so there isn't a good connection.

 

Start at the start. Pull one spark plug out, earth the end and see if you have anything.

 

module, coil, distributor pickup in that order. You can usually have the module tested at a parts store, the coil you can test with an ohm meter, 10 ohms resistance is perfect anything below that you should replace it. the pickup coil in the distributor is a pain.

 

What did you do to it since the last time it started fine?

 

Heck lets put it in my truck, I turn them over all the time, ok for real im guessing you mean it wont start, if you check everything already stated then check the compression

 

Well i went out this morning and picked up a new solenoid starter. and ignition coil both (GP SORENSEN) I remember not to long ago right before all this started i had to jump my old battery. And man did do a number on my positive wire. melted it all to help right up to the solenoid. but the solenoid looked ok. So i replaced the wire and installed a new 1000 amp autolite battery. I new the coil was old. pulled out of older truck at junk yard. do you think the solenoid might have been damaged inside. because that wire was melted all the way up to the post.

 

Check the Fuseable links, and see if one of them is burnt as well when the positive wire off the battery melted.

There is a fuseable link off of the starter solonoid if I remember right.

And if everything else checks out, check the ignition system, and switch. If it has a bad wire from the ignition switch to the rest of the ignition system, it would be like never turning your truck ignition switch into the run position. It's always in start or off mode, never on. (Like when you turn the truck off and the engine dies, etc.)

 

Yep! Thanks a bunch (81-F-150-EXPLORER) went out this morning and you hit it on the nose. The fuseable link on the positive side of the starter solonoid
was melted to the point it was just hanging there. i went down and got another fuseable pig tail i'll replace the old one tomorrow when i'm off work. when i replace the solonoid and coil to. That should take care of the problem. Where is that wire run to bye the way. alternator?

It depends on the year of the truck actually. More than one system or wire can be protected by a fuse link. That one fuse link off the starter solonoid could protect everything electrical on your truck except the starter itself.

 

I ran into something like that a while back. Run a wire from the positive side of the coil to the positive side of the battery and see if it will start. worked for me.
