Question '38 headlites

Has anyone tried those halogen conversion kits with the new reflectors and bulbs? If so, are they focused enuf to be of use or do they just shine like an old baseball field stadium lite?

Dunno, but for a good number of years I've been running halogen bulbs with the American pre-focus base [same as original] on 12 volt in original reflectors and lens, and they are literally brilliant!!! Why convert to a different type light socket when one can obtain a direct replacement in Q H? these bulbs are also available in 6 volt, but I dunno if a generator would keep up. [I run an alternator]

Hi Jailbar; Interesting handle! Could you be more specific about the pre-focus base thing, and what does QH mean? Also, my original refl's. need to be replaced and I can't see how they claim a turn signal can be put in the parking lite socket and be visible at nite!!?? Thanks-JH

Sorry if my reply was ambiguous; QH is my abreviation for 'quartz halogen'. American pre focus is the name given to that particular base with the three slotted locating holes around the flange. All I know is that for years I've been running these bulbs
[sourced from my local motorcycle shop], in stock [replated] reflectors in my 35 sedan [which has the same lights as a 38 truck], and as I've stated, they are brilliant!!!Far, far better than the 'sealed beam' units fitted in my 46 pickup

Which cycle shop do you use and do I just ask for Amer. pre-focus bulbs? Probably be better for me if I took an old bulb in and matched it. You say the socket is the same, but did you get a new refl. or who replated the old one? Does it still have another hole for the parking lite? Also, what alt. did you use and how'd you mount it?

I'm in New Zealand, so you won't get the bulbs from my local shop- sorry. Try a Google search maybe?; these bulbs are available. I used a local electroplating outfit to re-finish my original reflectors. It has the original parklight provision in the top. I run a single wire alternator bracketed off of the right hand head.
