I have a 97 Expedition Eddie Bauer Expedition with LLS. When ever I go over bumps I'm getting a clunking sound coming from the rear. I've replaced the shocks and the rubber stoppers on all doors and tailgate and the problem still exists. I also have another 97 Eddie Bauer Expediton w/ LLS thats starting to do the same thing but no where near as loud or sensitive yet. Is this a common issue on something working itself loose or a wornout part?
Just a thought ........... I had a "clunk" sound as well and found that the spare tire was not quite tight up against the bottom of the bed ......... so it would swing just a bit and make "clunk" sound .......
Tightened it up and now it is a quiet as a mouse ........
Do you have a trailer hitch that might be jiggling? Or did you maybe notice that the bolts that hold the rear shocks were worn a bit? Perhaps one of the shocks needs to be tightened down?
Spare tire is tight, hitch is solid, just replaced the shocks and the bolts were fine. I changed the shocks thinking the sound might be related but it wasnt. Just figured since I have 2 identical Expeditions that are now both making this sound that it might be a common issue.
I have the exact same problem with my 99. It drives me crazy because I can't figure out where it's coming from. I can stand on the back bumper and bounce up and down and not reproduce the noise, but if I go down a road that is just a little rough it sounds like something is rattling against the frame. I've checked shocks, antisway bar connections and tail-pipe, but they all seem tight. The manually pushed on the spare but it seems tight. I might try lowering the spare and cranking it back up, biut I don'tthink that will make a difference. BTW - have you had your rear brake pads changed lately? I changed mine a few months back and was wondering if I did something incorrectly that could be causing the noise.
Its not the tailgate, just replaced all the rubber stoppers/spacers just to see if that would resolve the issue... it didnt. I tried rattling the tailgate and rear glass... its solid. Dont think its the brakes, I have 2 Expeditions and the brakes were swapped out at differant times and we installed them properly.
I have the same problem and I found that there is a metal sleeve that goes over the rear shocks and that was rattleing every time I went over a bump in the road or over a speed bump it was anoying the heck out of me and I looked and sure enough there was that sleeve that went over the shock. I am not sure what the purpose of that sleeve was but that was the problem. I have a 97 Expy.
mine sounds like it makes the noise when the springs compress but the strange thing is I can't reproduce the sound by jumping up and down on the backend. It seems to rattle/clunk more frequently when I'm going down a rough road as oppose to going over speed bumps.
