I just bought what I think is a 42 ford truck (that is what the owner thinks, but he didn't know for sure. I haven't looked into the vin or anything yet(I understand that it is stamped on the frame, haven't cleaned that up enough to find it yet). I have a few questions about the truck..
1. What suspension do I have, the rear has 5 bolt 7.5-17 tires and a lot of leaf springs(I think it was 13 or so) Owner thought it was a half ton, but I think its bigger? With that info do any of you know what it is?
2. Do any of you know where I can find new tires in this size, or what size tire this is in metric?
3. Any particularly good sites on these trucks..parts, pictures, etc?
Dont worry about what kind of truck you have. Just some 9'' 4.10 gears and slap it on back there. Get a 302 and a C-4, and cruise it up. Convert those front brakes to discs. While you're at it, add rack steering. Take out that flat head, and put it in a tractor or something, they've got great low-end torque.
Howdy, Your truck is a 1 1/2 ton. And good luck finding any one to mount and ballance 7.50-17 split rims. I have a 41 Ford 1 1/2 ton pickup. It's probably the same suspension as yours. Thirteen leafs in the back and nine up front with the old knee joint shocks. No shocks in the back. Is yours set up as a dually?
13 rear leafs and 17" wheels, not a dually, is a 1 ton truck. The big trucks, 1.5 ton and up, used a 20" wheel, not 17", as standard eqiuipment. Very easy check...half ton has 114" wheelbase, 1 ton has 122" wheelbase, 1.5 and bigger had either 134 or 158" wheelbase. Half tons have a 6.5 foot bed, and the 1 ton has an 8 ft bed...if yours is a pickup truck. Check http://groups.msn.com/1942-1947fordtrucks for info.
