Well, I sort of got the 401 nailhead buick to run,but the knock gets worse the more I run it and the oil pressure is getting worse. Probably a good thing since a guy could hurt himself with 325 hp in an old jalopy like this one.Called tonight about a cheap beater 67 f100 with a good 300/6 and 4 sp.As it is a running rig,I could test the engine and drive it etc.Says it runs well and he drives it up and down the freeway etc.....So here is my question. How long is a 300/6 from fan to back of block? This guy will measure it next week when he goes to where truck is,bu I would like to know sooner as I need to make some decisions.I have a real nice custom radiator in there now and if I move it fwd 1 1/2" (easy) I will have 35".Anyone have one to measure? Anyone done this swap?I know Ford offered their fh 6 in 41(same truck)...Thanks in advance, GB

When you get the length of the 300 would you please post it. I have asked a couple people for it but haven't had any repies.
The block is 28", the crankshaft is 33". That's all I've got, since mine is all apart! It might fit- maybe with an electric fan. The Ford fh 6 was shorter, I'm sure. A 300 would be cool, plus there are plenty of performance parts available. That's why I'm putting one in my '64- V-8's are too ordinary!
The distance from the front of the block(timing cover surface) to the rear of the block(bell housing surface) is 29 1/4" and the distance from the front pulley face of the water pump to the rear of the block is 36 7/8". Hope this helps. Do you need the height from bottom of pan to top of valve cover?
Note: There is a fan spacer of 1 3/8" in my '78 300 six engine.

I hate to see people do it, but they have recessed firewalls available for old trucks. And anything can be done; I read about a project where they stuffed one of those monsters (a 300) into a Ranger! I guess there wasn't a lot of leg room left...
OK, So now Im heading out the door to go 1/2 mile dpwn the road where an old farmer has a 70's ford with a v8 and a 3 spd .I can haul it away for free.It comes with a 4 spd and all things necessary to convert it over.It was his brothers truck and he never got around to switching the tranny before he died.I guess it's one of those "Ran Good when Parked".He doesnt remember when it last ran(5 years ago ?)The reason it got parked was the linkage on the 3 spd was haywire.Wish me luck. How do I identify what V8 it is? thanks in advance GB
Valve cover says 1970 302...Took a short while to get it running, carb is all gummed up and needle valve glued in with smelly crud, but sounded great while my buddy squirted gas into carb throat. There is a clutch, flywheel, pressure plate etc in the cab and the 4 spd is in the bed. This engine looks like it will fit in there very nicely. Is this a common swap? Will it mount in someway with the flathead front mounts which are still on frame? What about trans?I see JC Whitney sells special crossmembers for engine swaps...I have done lots of old truck repair and restoration, but never an engine swap.Would appreciate any advice. Thanks, GB
I am in the process of aquiring a '46 1 1/2 ton, and someone in the past has put a 289/302 small block into it. It has a 4 spd and everything seems to fit real well with respect to how the old flathead mounted up. I can't wait to get it home to get a better look at everything! Maybe this week.
Thanks for that reply! It encourages me.The removal of the buick AND the 302,then making it all work is a daunting taskfor a 51 year old guy working nights in a cold garage. Then there is all that fumbling around trying to find my reading glasses.....Actually this 302 setup should be real nice in this truck.Anyone need a 401 buick V8 with a bad knock? GB ps any chance you could get a photo or two of the mounting of engine and tranny?
