3rd Member: Why is it so called?
Hi,
I've seen references to 3rd Members in adverts etc all seeming to represent Differentials or at least the pinion carries on the axle. I'm puzzled why they are so called as they are never refered to thus in the UK.
Can someone dispel the mystery (though I'm sure it's pretty simple!)

'Third Member' is usually in reference to the Ford 9" rear end and others of similar design. What makes this axle special is that it has a seperate cast housing the contains the ring and pinion gears and differential. This 3rd member housing is removeable from the main axle housing that has the axletubes attatched to it and all the rear end 'guts' come out with this 3rd member unit. Go to www.currieenterprises.com and look up the Ford 9" rear end. There you will see lots of pictures of it and all it's internal parts.
