GEARS. gears, gears, and more gears. I had a 98 Ranger 4x4 with a 3" body lift with 32x11.50's on a 15x10. I loved that truck but had to get me an 04 F-150 FX4. but anyway. I had a 4.0L in mine and I put a BBK 66mm throttle body with a K&N FIPK. Then I put 4.10 gears front and rear. The gears were a little steep for the tire size I was running but man that thing had some torque off the line. With your's being an automatic an 2 wheel drive I would put a 4.30 gear in the rear. It WILL kill your gas mileage though. There's just not much out there for Ranger performance.

I have a '94 4x4 with 4.0 and I have flowmaster single in dual out ,K&N filter, hypertech chip and my own custom made fresh-air intake.I am more than happy with the power (eats S10's for lunch) and will keep up with a stock 5.0 stang' until the speed limiter kicks in.I also have oversize tires with small lift and stock 3.73 gears so I would agree that 4.10's or 4.30's and 2wd would haul.Good luck!!
Hope this helps

gearing makes a huge difference, pick the wrong ones on either side and you'll be unhappy, somewhere there is a calculator that you can use to determine where your engine rpm will be at crusing speed with a givin tire size and gear ratio. other than that, get air in and out, better air induction and free-flow exhaust. zoom-zoom.
