Which sub size?

I was going to go with 2 JL Audio 10W7's but that will be impossible without removing my rear seat which ain't going to happen.

I was thinking of relocating the rear seat 2 inches forward so I would have room more room behind the rear seat.

So behind the rear seat of a SD CC what to put it will be JL brand thinking maybe 2 10W6's, maybe 2 10W3's.

Or how would 3-4 8W3's or W7's sound compared to 2 10's?

The rest of my system includes

Head Unit
Kenwood Excelon KDC-X879
Kenwood KTCSR903 Sirius reciever
KENWOOD Excelon KDC-CX87 10-Discs CD Changer

Speakers
JL AUDIO EVOLUTION XR570-CXi 5x7 Components 2 pair

Amp
JL Audio 300/4 for the components.

what kind of a vehicle do you have, if you look around, like crutchfield, you can sometimes find custom boxes for your vehicle. What are those W's sizes? If you do move the seat forward by way of custom fabrication, make sure theyre plenty strong, if you ever got in a high speed crash and the back relocating brackets werent strong enough say goodbye to anyone in them. Im sure if you have the skills you can make safe brackets, but make sure function is over looks.

I don't like the custom boxes they only have the one that goes underneath the console, and it is not loud enough.

The W are the size of each sub the 10W7 is almost 8" deep making it impractical to use behind the seat the 10W6 is close to 7"

yeah i know that most made-for boxes are weak, kinda sucks, but how much room do you have behind your seat right now, if you double up your front and use MDF you'll need at least 3-4" plus the subs, or if you put them at an angle its different i know you should be able to but itll take either a bunch of math, skill, or try and error to perfectly jam a 12" sub behind the seat. What were you thinking of using for those bench relocator brackets?

I am going to to use either 8's or 10's no 12" here. For the seat I will use either square tubing or angle iron.

I read somewhere where the 10W7 has as much surface area as a 12", That was why they have a 13W which is really a 15"

Just to give you some ideas, and to possibly think outside the "Box" no pun intended. I have a 01 superduty extended cab, which really doesn't have any room behind the rear seat. I removed the center console seat cushion and formed my own box. The box extends from the gear shifter (it is a stick) all the way to the back of the underside of the rear folding bench seat. I can send pictures if you would like. I was able to fit 1 JL 12W7, down firing The magnet of the speaker is just in front of the rear bench seat folded down and the back of the arm rest. The box took a bit of time to build but it turned out great. When I get around to it I will post some pictures of the box on this site, along with my install of my 3 single din units in the dash of my truck. I relocated the heater controls to the cup holder location. Feel free to E mail me at junkmail1299@charter.net

Tad, I would like to see pics of your entire set-up.

I am now thinking I might use a 12W3v2, and two 8W3v2. All three in there own sealed box of appropriate size.

Thinking maybe the 12" behind the rear seat and the two 8" subs under the rear seat with the three amps mount on the rear wall of the cab.

If I did that this would me the set up.

Kenwood X879 Head Unit
JL Audio XR570 5x7's Front and Rear
JL Audio 12W3v2 sub
two JL Audio 8W3v2 subs

The 5x7's will run off a 300/4 amp
the 12" sub off of a 250/1 or a 500/1
the 8" subs of of a 250/1

Then set the crossovers so the 12 is coming in around low pass 70hz the 8" subs set for bandpass 60 to around 150-200 then set the 5x7's on a high pass around 120.

I think the 8's would fill in the gap between the 12 and the 5x7's.

What do you think.

Brian460,
I have just added pictures of my truck and install to my gallery. Take a look.
Sounds like your 8's and 12 should do the trick. However it can be tedious process tuning 2 different size woofers.
I have been out of the car audio bit for a little while, but when I was in it, tuning 2 different sizes of subs was somewhat difficult. Everything from the box size, to the actual crossovers, due to the crossover slope can be a tricky thing to get nailed down.
Have you had systems before with multipul size subs?

I had a 86 mercury sable and had 6 8" JL Audio 8W6's in my rear deck. Sounded like S@*T below 75 Hz. I installed an 18" JL 18W1 with very little power, the box took up the entire trunk, almost. Tuning that car was the hardest, most tedious job I have ever done.

When I worked in the field as an installer, I would push customers to go with one size of woofer and tune the box accordingly. But that is just my thoughts.

Good Luck, and let me know how it all turns out.

I have an 04 SD CC and I installed an Inifinity BassLink truck box. It has 3 10" subs with a 250 watt digital amp built in and a remote volume control for the front dash. I had to remove the storage tray and the carpet behind the seat, but after you install the unit you can put the carpet back. I also have a Kenwood head unit with 4 Pioneer 6x8 4-way door speakers. It thumps pretty good for a truck. Remember JL's need a lot of air space in the box, which make them bigger then other sub boxes.

I haven't done the two different sized sub thing before but, I do have access to a RTA.

Also where can I get a 0dB test tone CD at? Anywhere online?

Hey guys I got the box and subs done.

Relocating the rear seat was easy the brackets that bolt to the floor also bolt to the seat I just redrilled the holes in them and moved the seat an 1.5" forward.

Wiring cleanliness is not the best though!

I love the 4" duals, depends on how loud you like it, I did not install the muffler or the cat.

W7 or similar sized subs will not fit behind rear seat. My three 10w3v2 give quite the pounding really. The guys where I buy my stuff are custom installers and they said with my set up I should hit around 140dB or so. Which is plenty loud for me and they are crystal clear.

Hi Brian,

Thanks for sharing the info. I am in the process of figuring out a method to install subs behind my 05 F250 Crew Cab. I have a bigger obstacle since I have the powerslide rear window. I have seen box that will fit 10" subs and will fit around the powerslide rear window. My question, hopefully you can help me out, I am looking into buying a custom made box on the internet for my specific truck, which will hold 2-10" subs.Price $198.00 What should I be looking for in regards to the components that make a box reliable, durable, and work well fo with the subs? This is my first time installing a sound system in any of my vehicles. Any advise a how to tackel this task? I am clueless.
