OK, I just got back from a trip and there is a slight kinda scraping sound from the front. I've read about the front wheel bearings on my 4x4 and was wondering if that might be what I'm hearing, the start of a bearing going bad ?
Is it an all or nothing thing with these bearings ??
How hard are they to replace ? And can I do it myself ??
Thanks.
Sounds like a bearing. You can do it if you have the tools for the job. The dealer did mine for me, cost me $240 plus parts, which I think were 150 or so. Had the U-joints replaced at the same time so the total for all was $675. Fix it while you can still drive it, they will go south fast!
I just had the brakes done and they are fine..
I've got all kinds of tools etc is there anything "patricular" that I would need ?
Is there a "thread" or instructions for changing these ??
Actually the front wheel bearings are quite easy to change. You have to make sure you have the correct socket for the locknut as well as a torque wrench capable of at least 210 ft/lbs.
External snap ring pliers and metric socket set. There is a snap ring on the end of the axle shaft behind the locking hub. The sealed bearing hub assembly is held on to the steering knuckle with 4 studs with nuts. Remove the nuts from the back side of the knuckle and the assembly will slide out. You will have to remove the brake caliper bracket and rotor first. if you jack up the wheel and find any slack in the hub, the assembly will need to be replaced. Bearings are not replacable on the '99 & up.

Bearings are not replaceable on the '99 and up ???? Then if they are not replaceable what do you do ??
The hub is serviced with a complete sealed assembly. The bearings and seal are not available separately. You replace the hub with a new one. My '01 has 4 wheel anti-lock and the hub came complete with new sensor installed. I got mine from an O'Reilly auto parts store for about $275. Ones without front antilock may be cheaper. Easy to replace, but hard on the wallet!
