Today I started my 2004 F250 SD 4x4 with heated mirrors, and when I got in the truck 15min later the driver mirror was cracked! Has anyone heard of this happening before? I plan to complain to the dealer since the truck is about 4 months old and this is the first decent spell of cold weather here in Boston.
Sounds like they should gladly fix it under warranty.
We had the '03 F250 with the heated mirrors at my sister's house in Iowa a couple of winters ago. It hadn't been run in over a day and it had gone down to 10 below overnight and I was heading out at 6AM to meet someone in Des Moines. They didn't crack then, or any of the other around-0-degrees conditions they've been in in the Chicago area, so I don't think it's an inherent flaw; I think you just lucked into a bad one.
I called the dealer where I bought it, they said they don't usually replace them once they leave the lot and I would probably have to pay for it! I plan to make a big stink about it if that is the case. One problem, about a month ago I cracked the plastic cover on the side blinker on the mirror, do you think this could be related? I didn't smash into anything, I was slowly watching if I could make it past a tree and it hit, so I pulled forward and then noticed later I had cracked it.
I would definitely make a stink since it broke while trying to work as designed, not through some fault of yours. HOWEVER... you may be doomed, if you have external cover damage on the same mirror. It's going to be really hard to convince them those two things are unrelated.
more than likely they wont replace the entire mirror but just the glass which is about $50 if they give in.
if you want to order just the glass go to the parts department. you have to save the drive pins in the back of the mirror for re-installation so dont throw anything away.
My dad has a 2003 and his passenger side heated mirror cracked. He nevered complain to the dealership. He just ended up putting one of them small stick on mirrors to cover it.

It happened to me last winter. Gervais Ford in Ayer fixed it without a question. As long as you don't have and "impact" point, you shouldn't have a problem. A dealer out by Detroit gave me a huge hassle. I was sick and didn't have the time to argue with them while I was out there. I didn't buy the truck from them...
