driveshaft measurements

i need some help from you guys and kinda quick as i only have about 4 days. I really need to know the ID of both front a rear driveshafts from an 80-86 3/4 ton truck (or just my 85 F-250)...I am getting ready to lengthen/shorten my shafts due to my 205 swap.

also, on the same note... i remember some of you said that you used the 208 adapter instead of the 205....would i still need to re-work my shafts then as well? the 208 adapter is steel not aluminum.

any help i would very much appreciate!

the steel adapter is a little longer than the aluminum 208 adapter. If you're using a C6, a CV driveshaft on the front with the 208 adapter and a 205 is (nearly) impossible.

which adapter you use will depend on which output shaft on the trans you have you need to correcto one, or the out put won't be the right length.

I'm just saying that the shorter adapter from the 208, when used with the 205, the CV joint hits the pan. If the adapter you're using is long enough to afford it, cool. But you better get your TC and tranny mounted and try to fit the CV joint in the TC yoke before you spend buck getting stuff made.
If you have NO CV to start with, then you're that much better off. Disregard my warning then.

well i dont' have a CV now but i would really like to be able to go to CV one day soon. the problem i am having now is the output shaft (on the tranny) is too short to use the 205's adapter so i think i am going to HAVE to go with the 208's adapter. the output shaft (on tranny pointing to the rear to be used for a TC) is like right at 7" long. the 205 adapter itself is like 11-12" so the splines from the shaft won't even touch the input on the TC.

how did everyone else do it? as of right now i will have to go with a 208 adapter unless someone can give me some better news!

thanx everyone

the only other option is to find a C-6 tranny that has the longer output shaft for use with the longer adapter, and change output shafts. or get the short adapter for use with the 205, but that would be a waste of time since it has been decided a little grinding will make the one you have work. I am running the short adapter, on a C6 with a 205 transfer with a 1330 ujoint, and have about 1" of clearence from the yolk to the crossmember not sure how much bigger a cv is as I don't have one around to measure it but I think it would still clear or wouldn't be real hard to modify the crossmember for clearance.

I'm just trying to think, are the tailshafts from 4x4 C6's different lengths? I thought they were all the same length. I may be wrong, but I thought they were all the same length.

No there are 3 different lengths that I am sure about, and I think there might be a fourth too, but not sure on that

Since you didn't really get an answer (although its been a while) you can use the 205 case with the 208 adapter, as i know of a few people that have done this, you could also try to find the longer adapter that was used on the 205's.

thanx for the reply mustange, lol. i am already using the 208 adapter as the 205 adapter was too long and i would have to search for a longer output shaft for my C6.

i really do need some measurements as my corssmember is bolted in now and the only thing holding me back from playin again is my driveshafts! i think i have to lengthen the rear by 4" and shorten the front by 4"

I would find a diveshaft from a 2x4 truck (sam cab configutaion or a crew cab) and go for there, that what i did in my 205 swap, just found a longer one and had it shortened, had new yokes put on it along with new joints, and for the front just use the one you have already have. doing it this way should save you some money as most shops won't lenghten shafts for liability reason (at least around here anyway)

Yeah no problem, you should be able to pick up something like that for pretty cheap (aka 50 bucks at the most) and at least you will have a lenght of tube that you can use, even if the yokes are trashed, just cut the ones off your old shaft or something.
