How to realign the flywheel?
I'm stuck in a bit of a bind here.
I have an '89 Ranger 4x4 with a 2.9L V-6. I have a manual transmission. I need to install the flywheel, but there isn't any pin or mark or anything to tell me what direction to point it.
There are 6 bolts, and it seems to bolt up just fine (finger-tight) in all six positions. How do I realign it?
I've seen some people refer to this as "reindexing" the flywheel.
Originally, this truck had a manual transmission. The previous owner did a half-job of installing an automatic, and it just wasn't working right. She gave me the original manual transmission and flywheel and other stuff along with the truck.
I got the transmission rebuilt, and the flywheel resurfaced. I bought a new clutch. Basically, I did all of the repairs that she should have done instead of kludging in an automatic.
But, now I can't figure out how to put the flywheel on correctly, and it isn't anywhere in the manuals.
Someone else has to have run into this problem before...
Thanks!
Andrew
Please help! My poor truck is in the driveway in pieces!
Thanks in advance!
-Andrew!
I don't know if there is any special position for the flywheel.
I'm *sure* that this helped loads....

Well, the flywheel does have the little half-moon shaped cutout, but it isn't *quite* close enough to have touched the end of the crank. So, no rust marks.
How would they line it up in the factory when they installed it?
Also, what's the theory? Is the heavy side of the flywheel always supposed to be lined up opposite to the closest cylinder or something? There's gotta be a trick to this.
I couldn't find the answer to this one anywhere. Nobody seemed to know. The only people I could think of that would know for sure - the guys at the Ford dealership service center - wouldn't talk to me or call me back.
I just decided to try it and see what happens. I just flipped a coin to decide where to line it up, and torqued it back on.
It seems to be working fine. I haven't noticed any new engine vibration, and it took care of the vibration I was experiencing with the old ring gear/torque converter set up.
So, either I totally beat the 6-1 odds and got the flywheel on there the right way, or it just doesn't matter.
I've never been one to beat odds, so I'm guessing it doesn't matter.
:-)
I hope this message helps someone else avoid this confusion in the future.
