I recently bought a 2002 Ranger Edge Supercab in 4x4. It came loaded from the factory, and I'm planning on doing some off-road driving (no hard core rock climing, just trails and stuff). I'm not a mechanic, but am technically oriented. ANyway, my questions are: 1) Should I have bought the FX4 package? 2) What type of rear differential is in it, limited slip? and if so, how does it differ from the FX4 version? 3) What are torsion bars/anti roll bars? 4) How do I tell what size rear axle and rear brakes are on it?
Sorry for any stupid questions, and should have gotten them answered before I left the dealer (was just excited about the truck and didn't think to ask), but any help would be appreciated. As for specifics for the truck, here are a few things that might help you to answer my questions:
4.0 L V6 w/5 speed auto transmission
Order Code 377A and Edge Plus Group
16" Al wheels
4.10 ratio regular axle
Class III trailer tow...(I'm pretty sure it has a xmission cooler)
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Sep-02 AT 11:41 PM (EST)]You have a limited slip.
the Fx4 has an upgraded limited slip and its more waterproofed so you can susposedly ford up to 2ft of water in the fx4.
where if you do that in the regular 4x4 you will end up having to repack the axles and change the transmission fluid.
Oh the fx4 has the bilstein(sp?) Shocks too. And perhaps a couple extra skid plates?
And finally the fx4 is avail with manual 4wd shifter.
Just reread your post.
You have an 8.8" Axle. Torsen(sp?) bars are your front suspension
vs coil springs etc.
look under the truck you will be able to seem em easily.
Rear brakes should be 10" drums
Anti sway bars stop the truck from leaning in turns, I'm almost sure that you have back and know you have front. The rear one would have links coming down from the frame in front of the wheels and the bar run across the truck and bolting to the axle.
Thanks for the info. I did look into the rear wheels and saw that the drums are rated for something like 256 mm (a little over 10 inches). I also assumed that the FX4 might be a little more robust underneath, and I guess that's the case. Otherwise, there doesn't seem to be much difference. Thanks again for your help.

note that the 2.3 i believe comes with 9" drums.. maybe the 3.0 too.
The fx4 also comes with forged alcoa wheels and bf goodrich mud terrains(or all terrains i forget)
ITs basically a 4x4 4.0 with some aftermarket parts. Not all the special. Probably cost them about 200-400 bucks extra if you take the new parts - the old parts. And they charge 1000 wow nice markup.

I figure about 36001 miles ill put about 1000 bucks into it and make it alot nicer than those "FX4 Superoffroad packages"
The only way I would buy the fx4 is if I wanted a manual 4wd shifter.
because They are just way overpricing a few aftermarket parts.
Now dont get me wrong I hope ford offers alot more packages like this in the future. Choices are good
