93 Aerostar Oil Pan Gasket, HELP!

I was barely able to get the pan off. Had to un-do the motor mount nuts, etc., and slightly raise the engine. Pain in the butt! Is there a trick to get some clearance?!!!! How in the heck is it done at the dealer?? My $7 manual was worthless as I was under the impression the pan would drop right down. HA!! So what do I need to do to get this thing back on without leaking? Also, is gasket sealant recommended? Thanks for any help anyone can provide!

some tricks to getting more clearance include,but not limited to;lifting the body,removing the trans. & flywheel{that's the ticket on this one,but you still need motor lift for support},removing fan blade & radiator hoses,removing dist. cap{where appl.}& removing the exhaust.For the gasket,1 piece rubber gakets generally need sealer only in corners.Follow the recommendations on the package.

If you have trouble knocking the gasket off when installing the pan try tying the gasket to the pan with thin cotton string. fwiw, ray

I purchased a one piece rubber gasket with metal grommets on the bolt holes. I put a thin layer of black RTV on the engine and let it sit until it was tacky. I then put the gasket in place and held it there in critical spots until it stuck by itself. Put the pan back on and no leaks, drips, or runs.

Hey SLICK;

How did you negotiate the oil pan clearance? Did you pull the transmission back or?
And here'e a question for someone who has no transmission experience: Can you pull the transmission back an inch or so after unbolting the bell housing without having to deal with the various transmission parts (such as torque converter, etc.). As you can tell, I'm trying to keep this as uninvolved as possible

Well, mine was in my truck, so I just lifted the engine about 4-5 inches. In order to slide your tranny back, you have to unbolt the bell housing and unbolt the torque converter from the flex plate and you should remove your drive shaft. To unbolt the torque converter, remove the dust sheild at the front of your tranny next to your starter, the flex plate will bolt to the converter with 6-8 bolts. You have to do them one at a time, remove the bolt, turn the engine, remove the next bolt, etc. Make sure you do not remove the torque converter plug or you will inadvertantly drain the fluid from your converter.
