1997 Expedition 4.6 won't start

My 97 Expedition quit while on the interstate. Had it checked & fuel pressure was low and we replaced the fuel pump. Pump is working fine now - BUT - it started just once & sounded like it was running on only 3 cylinders - then it died. Now it won't start at all. Sounds like it wants to but won't quite pick up. Mechanic said possibly timing chain. Is there any particular way to check without going into the timing cover???? Or does it possibly sound like something else??? Thanks!!

If the timing chain was bad, I doubt you could even crank the engine over. Did the pump that went bad contaminate the filter, and did you change the fuel filter?

Fuel filter was changed. Getting a good flow of fuel to the rail. Still won't start. Getting a little puff of air through the air intake as if it is out of timing.

Sounds more like an electronics problem. Maybe the ECU has gone bad.
