I need help. I have an 85 fsb 300 6 4spd man. with granny 1st.
I turn the key, I get a grinding noise. I have replaced the starter twice, voltage regulator three times, solenoid twice, and the battery is less than a year old. I think the starter gear is hitting the ring gear on the flywheel, but not connecting with it all of the way. Causing it to grind on the flywheel teeth. Either way, I cannot get the beast to start. Anybody have any idea what it would be? Your help is greatly appreciated.
same thing happened on my 351W. The flywheel was stripped. I used a 1/2 rachet to turn the crank a few inches and it starts up. Just carry the rachet with you until you replace the flywheel
actually you dont need to replace the fly wheel you can just replace the ring gear. it is about a thrirty dollar part. remove the fly wheel and with a torch start heating up the ring gear evenly all around and when it is hot enough you will be able to hammer it off. to install the new ring gear set it evenly on the flywheel and start heating it the same way and when it is hot enough you will be able to push it rite on with a piece of wood. let it cool and as it shrinks it will tighten to the flywheel. reinstall and you should be good to go.
you can also try to enlarge one or two of the bolt holes on the starter and pivot it closer to the flywheel and then tighten the starter and it may work also.
