Windshield washer pump replacement
The washer pump on my '98 4-cyl quit working. I have checked the hoses and nozzles. All are OK. The pump motor is working, but the pressure is very low and intermittent at the pump outlet. I've tried back-blowing air through the pump to unclog any foreign material, but that didn't help. Just got good bubbles inside the tank, so it looks like the pump inlet is not restricted. I'm assuming at this point that the pump impeller is broken or worn out. Now the question is, how do I replace the pump? What disassembly is required to get to it? How is the pump mounted to the tank? Are these pumps a dealer only item, or can I get one at the local parts store? Any help here would be appreciated!

For most of those pump-in-the-side-of-the-tank washer pumps, you can get a replacement at auto part stores. The pump unit just has the motor and the impeller, the plastic tank acts as the pump housing. Yank the old one, pop in the new one and off you go...

The ones I've seen are held in by one of those gnarly little "star" washers like they use to hold wheels on kids toys and cheap wheelbarrows? ('Cept this one would have the points on the outside of the washer instead of the inside, you know?) You usually have to destroy it to get it out, but the kit should have a new one. Pull the tank off and if it's like I'm saying, it should be pretty obvious...

As it turned out, the darn thing was clogged up at the pump inlet. I guess the common problem of the little round circular piece of paper from the washer fluid jug got in there. Also, my pump was very easy to remove. It did not have any retaining hardware. It's simply just pushed into the rubber seal. It pulled out with little effort. Didn't even have to remove the tank or unplug the connector. Then the seal/strainer was removed with my finger. The stainer was 90% clogged with paper. I cleaned out the tank, pressed the seal back in, and pressed the pump back into the seal. It works great now!
