I am in the process of restoring/updating a 1951 Ford F1. When we purchased the vehicle it had a Flat 6 motor installed. Previous owner told us it cranked, but they never got it running. Motor turns freely with rachet and has compression. I plan to install a big block, 460 in its place so I have no need to keep the Flat 6 or the the transmission, and was wondering what the opinion of the group was as to a fair price to ask for these items.
As with most things I realize that it is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it, but having an idea of value makes it easier to do business.
I also have an unneeded straight axle front end that again I would like an estimated value for
There isn't much value for the flat six. Although lately I have talked to a few people who are replacing a flat eight that was installed in their trucks with a six to bring their trucks back to stock original, most people, like you, yank the six and replace them with a flat eight or modern eight. I have gotten a couple of flat sixes for free because they aren't wanted. Whenever there is a six on eBay it just sits there and no one bids on it. If you can find someone who is doing a stock restoration you might be able to get $50-100 for the whole unit.
I have a flat six in my F-2 and find that it is a very strong engine and I have been told that back in the day people built flat sixes that could give any eight a run for their money.
Do you happen to know of any places that carry performance parts for the flat 6? I'm kind of partial to 6's (probably because my F150 has a V6)and would love to rebuild mine and give it a little more power than the stock 95HP.
Steve !! Bobs about right nobody builds 6s anymore. I had a good 51 flathead V-8 that sold for $500.00 easly at a swap meet, that I replaced by a 460. If I was you, if I had a F-1 that was going to be a driver. I would go with a 302 or 351. I have a 50 Ford F-5 And a 52 Merc. M-3 truck. Both have 460s in them. They are strong and quick. And both are a lot heavier then a f-1. But also they dont pass very may gas stations. They were build like 3 years ago, before gas was so high. I think if you put in a good small block, your be more then happy with the response. Check with other guys that have f-1s in this forum, I think your find most are running small blocks. GoodLuck !!
Off hand I don't know anyone who makes hi performance part for the flat six. You can try to do a search of this forum, I think there was a string a while back that dealt with this. I have seen aluminum heads on eBay a few times. You could also go to the flathead sites and ask around.
I too had a 6 in my truck - I was able to sell the engine and tranny for $100 but it ran and ran great at that. The 6's were a great engine and could take a lot of abuse and the ones I have ran always started and had a lot of guts.
