OK I am planning a 302 to 351w swap. I am looking for torque for towing while keeping it Speed D. happy.
Here is the plan...
351w reman from local parts store or ATK $1400 (with no core)
ford racing shorty headers $300 (alreadly have free flow exhaust from there back)
Edelbrock 5.8 EFI intake $556
Comp cam 35-255-5 $150
351w distriburtor junk yard. $??
*$2500 total..
So what do you all think? What kind of HP and torque will I get?
Any suggestions?
One thing I am not sure of is the Edelbrock intake. Edelbrock web site claims 34 ft/lbs. more torque than stock. Anyone use one of the intakes? Is it worth it?
Only thing I saw that caught my attention is your $2500 estimate for the total project. You may wanna realistically add a good percentage to that amount, the gaskets for the cam swap and headers, antifreeze, oil, filter, new wires, plugs, belt, etc, add up real quick......probably a few other things along the way you will find yourself replaceing just because your there. Another thought, you might consider a reman distributor from your local autoparts store, they aren't that expensive with a core, they may allow you to use your old 302 distributor to get the 351w one or some people have just sent it back anyways, they probably can't tell anyhow, not that I suggest that. Good luck, keep us updated as you go
Yeah I left off the belts, bolts, hoses, gaskets, wire and fluids. That is just part of an engine swap. I plan on keeping th truck for awhile so will probably replace most that stuff. Probably new water pump and time chain cover as well.. So $3K is more like it..
Good call on the reman distriburtor I think that is what I will do. I have never changed an engine in a ford trunk. I have changed quite a few others though (few chevys, jeeps, Nissan and a pontiac,). Some come out easier with the trans attached some with out. With four wheel drive I was thinking without the trans. How hard are the bell housing bolts on these?
I pulled my engine without the tranny, its a 2wd, probably because the radiator support was rust welded on, so removing it was impossible at the time, and the lift I was using wouldn't give me enough height for the angle to pull both. Good luck, keep us updated
Oops I forgot you were not going to have a core. That is 300 more so your price will be around $1100. However there is one on Ebay now that is going for $795 that is new in a crate and its been there for a while. I am sure you could get that one and the shipping is only $150. They have the roller cam version for $1000. Ed
