Help identifying 302

I am rebuilding a 302 out of a 71 mustang. The engine is not original. I believe the block to be from the early 70's. Is there anything I should be looking for concerning what year it was from?
Block Casting # D10E 6015 AA
0JS
23

The heads do not match years. They have different spark plug sizes.
Casting # from under the head
Small hole one (newer?) - D60E A8B 6 302
Large hole one - C9TE 16 302

From what I have heard, the newer heads after 74 had small plugs and hardened valve seats. I probably will get remanufactured head so they match, but am curious if there are size differences that would change compression. I have two broken rings on the head with smaller plugs. So far, I have to bore the cylinders since the broken rings caused some minor scoring and grind the crank since the bearings are really toast. I think this thing really got beat or hot since there is heat discoloring on the camshaft and pistons. The block looks ok, but I am going to check it over real close and make sure everything is straight and no warpage. Any other advise would be helpful. Thanks

From what I can tell the c9te (truck) head is 58 cc combustion chambers and the D6 I couldn't find anything specific to it, but if I had to guess, the combustion chamber cc should be around 69cc being it is a mid to late 70 casting, but thats just a guess. If your after a set of factory heads that would be a good option, you could search for the gt-40 or gt-40p heads (58cc), even a set of ported E7TE (64cc) heads would be a good option and cost effective and there is always the 351w D0OE heads (60cc), you probably knew that, just thought I would mention it. The D0OE I mentioned do not have hardened exhaust seats unless they have been modified the others I mentioned do. Good luck with your build

You got my vote for the E7TE heads. Good head and cheap! GT40 head would be even better if you have a little more cash. GT40p heads are also good but keep in mind you will need a special header/exhaust manifild to go with the "p" heads.
Of course if you wanna go real cheap head out to your local junk yard and pick up another D8 or D9 casting head to match the one you already have. I have used many sets of the 78' and 79' castings to changeover a non-hardened seat motor to hardened seats and "knock on wood" have NEVER had to do anything more than just have the valves ground. No new guides, no new seats......nothing. Just grind em and slap em on. Those heads are very plentiful. Look on T-birds and Ltd's in the 78-80 years.
