AOD Swap and troubleshooting
I've learned that you want to have an AOD from 1988 or later, as they are a little better.. something to do with lubricating the tailshaft better, I believe..
Also, it should be beefed up if your Bronco will be a high tourqe application.. the AOD's, and most of the same era automatice overdrives that i've encountered, are weaker than the tried and true 3 speed automatics out there....
I have one from an 88 LTD that was behind a 302. I can't afford to beef it up, but I will be using a monster tranny oil cooler, and will have a gauge to monitor temperature. In my truck, it will be behind a 300 Inline 6 that I will use until I figure out what to do for a longer term engine solution.
Another crucial thing is the tv cable that you will need to mount to your carburetor throttle linkage. If this isn't set right, you will blow your tranny. A good rule of thumb is to first have it attached so that there is no slack in the cable when carb is at idle. You can make your minute adjustments after that to determine how crisp your shifts are.
Unfortunatly I didn't understand how important this was to have set up right from the get go. I threw one in a 79 F150 a few years back, and figured I'd fab a bracket for the cable *after* I got my truck home from the place I put the tranny in. BAD idea. The AOD was ruined...
