i have absolutely no idea where to get a c-4 tranny. i have a 67 mustang fastback that i would like to get one for. it now has an fmx -aka- cruise o matic(obviously aftermarket for this model year). also, would there be any problems matching this transmission to a 351 Cleveland? (also another aftermarket engine for this model year)...another thing id thought of is if a c-6 would be a better option because of my engine. any 4 or 5 speed manual transmission that would match a 351C would actually be fine but the c-4 and c-6 are preferable. any information is appreciated.
thanks
C-4 and C-6 are both 3speed automatic transmissions without an overdrive gear. C-4 is typically used behind small blocks and 6 cylinders (289, 302, 351W). C-6's are used behind small blocks, big blocks and diesels and do not all have the same belhousing bolt pattern. AOD's and E4OD's are 4speed autos with the 4th gear being an overdrive gear. but I don't think you can put one behind a 351C without some kind of adaptor, if one exists. You can put a C-6 or an FMX behind the 351 Cleveland, as well as a 4speed manual (stick shift).
What do you mean a manual C4? Are you referring to a semi-automatic C4, where there is no actual automatic shifting? If thats all you need you can buy a manual valve body in put in an automatic C4. Unless you have serious torque coming from that engine I would stick with the C4 over the C6, I have read that a C6 eats up something like 60 hp (sounds like a bit much to me) just from the increase in rotating mass. And besides a C4 can be built to handle much more torque than stock (like just about any other trans) Certainly it can't be too hard to find a trans somewhere, most good parts stores should be able to get ahold of one or a bone yard, and rebuild it.
