What engine sizes and types were offered?

What types of engine sizes and types were offered in the Bronco II? I know that there were 6 cylinders, but did they also make it in a 4-cylinder size?

Did they make it in a diesel? I found reference to one made in 1984 with a 4-cylinder diesel engine.

Which would be the best to buy? My main reason for it is travel, not so much as to tow or haul things.

Thanks for the help.

Yes, there was a 4 cylinder diesel produced, but I for one have NEVER seen one..

There was a 2.8 V6 (Carb) avail in 1984 and 1985 models

The 2.9 V6(Fuel injected) was available in 1986 through 1990(There is a rumor that there were a FEW made in 1990 with the 4.0, but I have yet to see it proven a fact)..

The 2.9 is a good motor, although the 86-89(save for later 89 models) had a problem with poor head design that was very unforgiving if you allowed the motor to overheat.. The 86-87 also had a larger throttle body(58mm) that can be swapped onto the 88-90 models with little problem..

The 89(later model) and 90 also had the 2.9 V6, which included a "better" head design, along with a newly designed front clip..

All models were avail with a 5spd,4spd or Auto, with the 84 model having a C-5 instead of the A4LD..

I think you would be happy with an 89 or 90 model although the 86-88 models are also fine.. I would not tow with ANY of the models though, unless its very lightly and under NO CIRCUMSTANCES do it with the A4LD as its just not beefy enough.. If you do get an Auto(A4LD, make sure you put a nice Tranny Cooler on it, as the tranny will thank you for keeping it nice and cool)..
