Question Okay... how bad is it to change the head gasket??

Hi gang

Haven't been on in awhile. The little beastie has been running real good. Actually in my free time I'm a volunteer firefighter. So when my pager goes off I hop in the little BII , hit the lights and blast off to the firehouse. She has been purring like a kitten... that is until now..... hah. I'm seeing white smoke at start-up a nice big puff of it. And she's been eating coolant. I flushed everything out a few weeks ago, cleaned up the radiator, changed the water pump and put in some fresh Zerex. Also a new T-Stat was installed.
My buddy at the firehouse had an 88 and it started doing the same, he was told it was his head gasket... He junked it rather than repairing it... So tell me how much of a horror is it to do.. or should i just send it to a shop and have it done ???

I'm thinking you cracked a head, thats much more common then a gasket problem. Head replacement is pretty straight forward, just pulling everything off the top of the engine. Don't reuse the head bolts, they are torque to yeild.

I might be doing this soon also. What do you mean torque to yield Ken00?

The bolts stretch when they are torqued to the proper specification, thats why you can't reuse them

its not that hard. I did it to my b2 about 2 or 3 yrs ago. i went down to the auto parts store and bout a head gasket set and an valley pan gasket(was not in the head set) and took me about a week to do (work and school, if i didnt work og go to school at the time i could have had it done in bout 2 days). the stock head bolts are a 55 torex (i think), the replacement bolts that came with the kit are standard hex hed bolts. its faily eaisy.

While you have it off you might as well have it fluxed at the machine shop. You won't see them fine cracks. A cracked head is your most likely the problem. No sense doing it twice.
