anything l/s sucks in bogging or crawling! Trust me! I would get a selectable locker (yes easier siad then done) you won't be very impressed considering the time/money for one!
but no i have not actually had any experience with them!
i've changed my mind anyway. I'm already set on the new and improved Detroit locker. Supposed to be the best and strongest, great for mudding, rock crawling and everything else. Supposedly locks one to one. any thought?
hell yea! I would love to have one but cash is always an issue! Ho has a Detroit in his beast. he doesn't like it b/c it has a delay time whereas a spool is always locked! My truck is a DD so I would kill for a Detroit! (not really)
Yes, a spool is always locked. Great for the strip and in the mud but come the highway or street driving, it's axle snapping time.
When looking for a locking diff or a limited slip, I need to take into consideration that I do alot of around town and highway driving as well as offroading, so I need a diff that's not going to snap, clatter, clunk, snap axles, tear up tires, but still perform decently in the mud and other off roading conditions. The problem with the Zexel that I found, is that it doesn't work in reverse, which ruled it OUT all together for me. The upside is that there are NO clutches. Anyway, for another 200 bucks, id rather just get the best and be done with it.
The new Detroit is supposed to be a little softer on engagement and disengagement and not clank around as much as the old ones. They are also more expensive than they used to be.
I opted for a Powertrax LockRight for the F350. It chatters a little and clanks occasionally, but not bad. So far I like it, and it was about 2/3 the price of a Detroit. One of my friends has LockRights in both ends of his Jeep CJ and said they were good, so I had one put in the rear axle when I swapped to 4.56 gears. Going from 3.55's with open diffs to what I have now is a major improvement!
As far as the Torsen, I've never had an experience with one.
I had a powertrax swapped into a ford 9inch on my truck.. It made the worlds biggest difference. it is pretty noisey and clanks enough. I don't think i'd run one in the front unless I didn't need to run in snow or ice (which is about 4months out of the year).
I heard that the Powertrax NO-Slip was their newest and best product. It's a true 1 to 1 locker but is more quiet and clatters less with smoother engagement.
Only problem is that my stock open diff is rusted to death and I don't think I can use it anymore to insert the powertrax into, so I think I have to buy a locking diff that comes in its own carrier.
That's why I'm just forking up the cash and going for the gusto, the Detroit Locker. Does anyone know where I can find a really really good price for one?
UURRGGHH, I have to call for prices. I'll do it tomorrow and see what kind of price they have. I hate having to call for prices though because then you've got a salesman on the other line trying to jar you into a sale.
