Like to swap 5-spd OD for 4-spd
have a 1988 F-150, 300 straight six w/ 5-spd OD Toyo, Kogyo & 3.08 rear. Trans is shot (mn cluster blown) and difficult to find a reasonable low mileage, decent warrenty replacement w/o trading first born (I suggested it to him and the ungrateful lil' cuss refuses to go!!). A friend suggested I find a similar year, make model truck with a 4-spd and get the rear punkin' also. Another "friend" suggested it might be an option to exchange the rear end for a higher ratio like out of an automatic truck and go w/ a 4-spd. Questions are:
1) is it possible ...
2) is it practicle ...
3) what yr / model would be best suited for decent mileage and
moderate pulling ...
If you've done this, been there or whatever PLEASE let me know!
A ZF 5 speed would be a great upgrade, while keeping your overdrive.
However, putting a T-18 from a similiar year F-150 would also work great, it will give you a nice low first gear for towing, and with your stock 3.08 gears your cruise rpms will be fine.
At a minimum you will have to get a bellhousing and probably a driveshaft with anything other than a ZF or M5OD (and probably a master cylinder also).
