Just a plain stupid question but I just wondered...
How much more torque/HP can a good ol' A4LD tranny take? I currently have a 2.9L V6-powered '88 B2... Wondered if that might hurt the tranny if I made some improvements to the engine...
As for specs, I do not know. I would say 200 hp/250 ft pds would be the max. The most you will get out of the 2.9 will most likely be 160-177 HP and the A4LDs are put behind very heavy 4.0L Aerostars, so go for it. The later ones had more improvements.
Your first improvement should be a very large tranny cooler with fan. Change your fluid every 30k. or more often if you off-road, tow, or plow.
Mine lasted in my BII until 148k and it plowed, went off-road, hauled firewood, and was a daily driver.
Big tires (31-33s) wil kill the tranny faster then any engine mod you can do to a 2.9L, imo.
