I am wondering about who everyone thinks was the best. I want to know why you believe what you do.
Mine is Andrew Jackson. Our seventh President, 1829-1837. He showed America what he was made of before he was elected with the War of 1812. In the office he was not afraid of political ramifications. He did what needed done when it needed done and no second thoughts.
Mine would have to be James Madison. He has been called the "Father of the Constitution", and helped frame the Bill of Rights. Judging from some of his writings and quotes, I'd guess him to be the most angry of all past presidents at the speeches given by today's crop of Democrat presidential canditates.
i am not much of a presidential history buff so i can only talk about the presidents i can remember. i would have to go with ronald reagan. he was a good president but the thing that stands out in my mind was a speach he gave in the wake of a tragady( i know he did not wright it) that still brings tears to my eyes just to read it let alone remembering the look on the mans face when he gave it www.reaganfoundation.org/speeches/challenger.asp
.........Number 1 has to BE Old Abe Lincoln......given the timing of the start of the civil war just as he is sworn into office. Most of his cabinet thought him a country bumpkin but ALL soon learned the Depth of his Logic and his Total commitment to the preservation of the Union.
.........Number 2....on my list would be G.Washington because he fought so bravely during the course of the war and preveiled with an Army of volunteers and living conditions that most men wouldn't have been able to cope with. And, in addition, as our first President EVERY decision that he made was setting a Prescedent for Future President's to follow . He had NO roadmap to follow so he had to depend upon his own inclination(s) to ensure that this new experiment would continue to grow and prosper.
..........Number 3 on my List would be....FDR....because he established the WPA and the other public service projects during the depression that put people back to work and gave them back a sense of dignity and self worth when they needed it so badly. For establishing the Social Security System which allowed poor people to atleast eat and have a roof over their heads. And finally, His leadership and tenacity during the course of WW2. He held his fireside chats with the American Public and reassured them over the Radio when we couldn't see what was going on for the most part because everything was censored until after the war was over. And, quite simply,.....because he was A great Man and a Leader in a Time when we, as a Country , needed such as HIM!!!............s,kuteman
Lincoln. What a loss we suffered by his assassination, what could have been. He may have been the only one to have shown us the way to unite after the Civil War, with charity for all, malice toward none. Instead we got Andrew Johnson, too sympathetic, IMO, to southern causes.

Andrew Jackson was certainly an independent thinker. He was in nobody's pocket and didn't think that government employees should have tenure for life. His outstanding military career made him a very popular President with the public, too.
