Angry 1995 Windstar Brake Light Problem?!?

I'm having brake light problems with my 1995 Windstar. There are 3 brake lights. The 1st is in the middle of the van, just above the hatch-back door. This one is working fine. The other two, located on the normal areas (rear driver/passenger side) are not working.

Bulbs are all good. Changing the fuse, relay, or switch (whatever it's called) that's located by all the other fuses and relays under the dash hasn't helped. Changing the switch that actually hooks onto the brake pedal on the floorboard hasn't helped either.

I'm running out of ideas except to put it in the shop for an electrical diagnostic...an expense I'm trying to avoid as I'm still dealing with the post-Christmas pocketbook.

Hoping someone out there knows what the deal is!

HI Eddie,

Welcome to FTE!

The Windstar is based on the Car format, not the truck.

But that doesn't mean we can't help you.

I will be moving your thread to the Electrical forum for professional help

Do those two lights have seperate grounds from the upper light? Is the harness to those two lights good? You might need to get a wiring diagram, a Haynes manual would have one. Also get a Volt/Ohm Meter, and then you can chase down the problem.

Not really sure about the grounds or harnesses..not ever having had this problem, I'm not sure where to look for these.

My brother-in-law is an electrician, maybe he'll have an v/ohm meter.

The difference between the center light and the two other "normal" lights, is the center light is fed directly off the pedal switch. The two other lights get their power from the pedal switch, but it runs through the turnsignal switch. That is because the brake lights and the turn lights are the same filament in the bulb. The turnsignal switch (sometimes called a "multi-function switch"), co-ordinates the power between the brake pedal switch, and the flasher power for the turnsignals. Start suspecting the turnsignal switch as possibly the problem.
