I have a 2003 F 150 with the 4.6 engine 5 sp and 4x4. The truck came with an open differential 3.55 gears and I want to install a posi unit. The dealer told me that they can not fit a ford factory unit in my carrier, it was too small. This seemed strange to me and to a very experienced drive line shop in my town. My options include using an Eaton unit with carbon friction discs or a unit by Powertrax that mounts between the spider gears( I think) that supposedly is easier to install and gives excellent traction. Does anyone have an experience with these products or the inability of the dealer to install a posi unit?
I work at a dealer and have installed a few Ford limited slip units.
The carrier that the crown gear attaches to has to be replaced with the limited slip one. In that go the clutches, side gears, spider gears etc. It's not a big deal to do as far as the labour goes, not sure what the parts cost.
Go with the powertrax or a lockright. You don't have to pull the carrier out for that just the spider gears.Plus it just like a locker then not a limited slip.
I would go with the eaton unit over the factory unit.
BEWARE THE POWERTRAX/LOCKRIGHT CAN BE VERY NOISY. I did not like mine at all for the driving I do, but if you go off road its nice to have the full lock traction.
If you plan to use the truck mostly for wheelin' go with a Powertrax.
If you plan to spend most of the time on the road and do some moderate wheeling, the Eaton will behave much better out on the street and still provide added traction.
