Can anyone out there provide an honest appraisal of average gas mileage for a new F-250 regular cab 4x4 automatic with a 5.4 gas-burner? Also any towing experience would be helpful.
My 01 F250, 5.4 auto, 3;73 gears 35" tires, chipped, K&N FIPK, cat back, gets 14 highway 12 around town. Can't help with the towing part as I don't consider dragging my jetski around actual towing.
Never tried to figure my fuel mileage, i dont really want to know. Whenever someone asks me my mileage, i tell them that i fill it up when it gets low. These vehicles a big, heavy and built for a purpose, and they do it well, but fuel econemy is certainly not their high point.
As far as towing, i tow a 26ft. camping trailer and the truck does a fairly good job at it. I think the next time around i am going to go for the diesel as i am setting up for a larger 5th wheel.
My '02 4x4 5.4 3.73 265/75r16 gets about 12.5 regular driving. I don't think I flog it. It's hard for me to distinguish highway/city miles with a 38 gallon tank, I do alot of both before the fuel light comes on. I usually have around 400 miles on a tank when the light comes on. I haven't towed anything heavy far or fast, pulled a 12,000 pound grain wagon out of the field and a coulple of miles without any problems power-wise. I have a little boat, and haven't towed it far. Mine still has less than 4k miles on it. I have seen some really high estimates from people on here when it comes to mileage. If you tow moderate amounts I would go for either the V10, or at least 4:10 gears. If you tow alot, look at the diesel. My truck is basically what I think a 1/2 ton should be like. If you want to get into the SUPER part, I think diesel, V10 or gears, and damn the mileage.
My 99' SD Long Box 4X4 SC, 8 city 11 hwy. It's going in the shop tomorrow! Something has gone south in the last couple of weeks, my mechanic is going to go over it. I'll let you know. When I bought it it was around 11-12 city 14-15 hwy. It does smell like it's burning a little rich at idle. Hope this helps. By the way I sure didn't but this thing for the mileage, I knew it was going to be bad. I live a mile from work, walk it in the warm months drive the tank in the cold months.
2001 SC 4X4 SB, 4.10, 5SP Pretty much get 14.5 to 15.5 80%hwy 20%city. Towing my boat is about the same. Mileage improved when I added the ARE canopy. I was getting 12 to 13 until i hit the 6000 mile mark and then it started to improve with every tank. I love this motor.
I have a 2002 F250 SD CC 4x4 with 3.73 gears. Get 15-16mpg doing 70mph on highway. Get about 11 around town. Got about 9mpg towing a horse trailer. Mileage not a whole lot better than those with a V10 seem to get. Would probably go with the V10 next time.
My V10 with 3.73's gets 12-13 with all black-top backroads driving. I took it on a camping trip this summer (loaded down but no trailer) and got high 14's on the interstate but each of those tanks had at least an hour of "stop and go" traffic. Haven't had a good interstate trip to check it on yet.
All kidding aside, are you people really getting 14 mpg an up from 5.4's with 4;10 and 4wd? I have a 2001 5.4 4x4 4;10 short bed extented cab automatic and get about 11 mpg with a tail wind, jeez. You guys are lucky!!
I was going to take mine in last week but they couldn't fit it in. I'll wait until next week. There are a few things that people more or less stretch the truth about, women, gas mileage and how much money they make! Don't count on any one of these being true, not that they are lying, it's more like a slight exaggeration. Some just won't admit that their baby is a gas hog. Come on now, the thing ways over 6,500lbs. what do you expect. If you want good mileage get a diesel, if you don't care or don't like diesels get the gas rig, but don't expect good gas mileage because it just ain't there.
Still love my truck, so does the gas company!
Mine is a 02, 5.4L, auto, ex-cab short box with 4.10 gears and 315 75 16's (or 35's) and get between 9 and 13 on the norm. Usually towing my 16' enclosed trailer with tools and 2 fourwheelers I get around 9. One time last summer on a real hot week I got 16.? but that was the only time. Hope that makes you feel better.
I have two F-250 Superduties w/ supercab, auto trans w/overdrive and 8' beds. One gets 15.5 mpg Highway and approx 13 mph city. The second gets 14 to 14.5 highway and 12.5 mph city. Jake.
11 mpg average / V10, auto, 3:73...around town....pulling 6500 tt, under 10mpg....my fuel tank stays full the longest when I just look at the truck in my driveway. BIG toys for big boys cost big bucks, drive less or make the wife and kids get second jobs!! ( or drink cheap beer) Dan / FT
