4.0 vs. GMC 4.3 vortec
My dad has a 2002 sonoma vortec 4.3L 2wd. I have a 99 ranger 4.0 4x4. They both are auto. his is rated at 207 ponies, and mine at only 160. I admit passing on a 2 lane road his might do a LITTLE better but off the line i kill his truck. Do Ford and GMC use different devices to measure HP? cause his and mine are really close. way to close to have 47 hp between them. and another thing, everyone says how "smooth and quiet" the 4.3 is, but i love the sound of my 4.0 if you cant hear it. then why drive it?

I guess I already replied to your other post about the 4.0 and 4.3 over in the Ranger Forum, and that I think the Sonoma 4x2 has only 180 HP. and the 4x4 190. One thing I have noticed about the 4.3 is the way that they feel snappy with only a little throttle because of the way the computer has it tuned, so it feels strong at first but disapointiong when you put your foot to the floor. The 4.0 on the other hand seems to have more gradual power delivery depending on throttle position, but when you put your foot down it goes. And yeah, the 4.0 sounds much better than the 4.3 IMO, especially since adding my intake and exhaust.

you hit it right on the head. The throttle is "snappier". It has a bood initial punch then it lets you down. And i think ur right on the hp rating on the sonoma. My dad told me it had 207, and i remeber proving him wrong through some review that said 180. I wish i had an exhaust and intake. i am poor though. I am thinking about making a snorkel though. ill make a post and see the best way to go about it.
