From the guys that I've talked to that have it and run a real trans temp gauge they say that the stock one is pretty much useless. The needle rarely moves and when it does move towards and into the red it's generally already really hot.

Hope this helps.

I've also heard this. Mine usually runs in the mid range of the stock gauge. But I would like to know from someone that has a good after market gauge what temperature their actually running.

Bullseye:

I was coming west across Nevada summer of '03. The outside temp was 100º+. The fan would cycle on and off depending on road conditions. Neither the engine or the tranny temp gauge ever moved. I didn't put two and two together at the time but my new ride will have a combo gauge for those functions. The sensors are already installed and I'm just waiting for the quad pod to arrive.

I hear ya, gauges are near the top of my mod priority list. Where are you getting your quad pod from?

Although not as scientific as dieselmann, I found the same conclusion. It has 4 readings: cold, normal, hot, and too hot. It suits my towing needs. I watch it to avoid blowing up my tranny when towing heavy loads (esp. in the mountains).

I found the same thing with an oil prssure guage.

I ordered mine from Diesel Manor. It hasn't arrived yet but I would imagine there is only one manufacturer of the pods so I'm not worried about the quality. Pro Pods is another source. Ford Performance Specialists also carries them. I'm installing a combination oil pressure/water temp; a combination tranny/diff temp, boost and EGT. My MasterBrake controller also has a digital EGT capability and I'm going to investigate costs on that to see if it is worth it to install a post-turbo pyrometer.
