Background: I had to take my truck to the tranny shop because i was really hard on it but:
Ok maybe it's sticker shock, but $2650 for a tranny job? This is the second time it has been to this shop, so $500 was deducted so i have to pay $2150. They said something about the whole second gear is gone. Is this price normal.
I have seen trannies(E4OD Ford and 4L60 Chebby) rebuilt for between $1,000 and $3,000, depending on what is broke, quality of parts, quality of labor and local competition etc. The prices I have seen are based upon many postings to this Ford web site and a chebby site over the years.
I had my 94 E4OD rebuilt for about $2,500 about 3-4 years ago. I had all uprated parts and told them to build it so it would be bullet proof for towing. I had a 96 4L60 rebuilt just last month for $2,600, it required the usual parts plus sun gear, planetary gears and a heavy duty reaction shell(a known weakness in that model) all expensive parts.
You can find lower costs and even off the shelf replacements for much less, but what the shop I used told me is that many of the off the shelf or standard rebuilders just use stock components and often reuse old components that may be worn but within spec. they often do not include uprated components for known weaknesses. Both times my trannies used all new or remanufactured components and uprated parts if available. No marginal parts were retained.
So I have paid plenty but hope that it will pay off in the long run. It may take me a long time to find out though since I don't expect stock trannies to die until about 100K and if the rebuilds are better, they should go much longer, so I hope. The shop could have done the job for much less but would not have met my stated objectives.
The E4OD in my '90 Bronco took about 2500 bucks to rebuild in 1999. It's not abnormal. Especially, if there are updates available that need to be done.
