Looking for headers, that will work with 4x4,

Hi guys, I currently have my 351 Windsor on an engine stand and I'm doing a gasket overhaul and seals as well as some other things. I am considering putting a pair of headers on the truck, I have a 1989 Ford f250 4x4, 351 Windsor with a C6 , and a Dana 50 ttb in the front,
I'm not looking to break the bank on these, I believe I need shorty headers, if anybody has ran headers on these trucks before, any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have almost the identical truck and setup and used JBA shorties. Happy with mine.

I use Hedman shorties. Only time you need “specific” headers would be long tubes. Shorties will bolt straight up to Y pipe.

As long as they are for a 351, they will work. Delete the EGR tube and you can use 302 headers.

Might I suggest header gaskets, I kept getting leaks until I bought a set of remflex gaskets. Solved that problem!

My buddy did the same (JBA shorties) with his now-393W '95 F250XL/standard cab, 8' bed 5.8L auto 4x4.

302 headers are NOT the same as 5.8L headers. The factory Y-pipe WILL fit 5.8L shorties, but 5.0 shortie exits will be too far apart and an inch higher, making pipe from there back more difficult fitting around shift linkage, 4x4 driveshaft on the drivers side, and may hit the AC plenum on the passenger side. The 5.8 shorties are routed tighter to the engine block and extend farther down.

My mistake! I could have swore I read threads on people using them if they deleted the EGR. If they are longer, then in theory 302s could use a 351 y pipe with a little finagling.

On 351W-swapped Fox Mustnags and such, the 351W-swap shorty headers tucked in and down a bit farther so they exited at the same location as the 5.0 manifolds into the H-pipe, so it actually bolted right up to the stock exhaust! waaaaaay back in 2006, I used 351W-swap Mustang shorties on the 393W in my '89 Crown Vic - I had initially tried 5.0 shorties, but as I stated above, the 5.0s stayed 'high' and were in proximity to my A/C plenum and melted it! The 351W-swap headers tucked in closer to the engine block, and from there I used a 2-1/2" 'off-road' 5.0 Mustang H-pipe...

You need to be willing to bend the collector on the drivers side away from the 4x4 components. I have installed enough long tubes on this vintage truck to know that even the long tubes that are infamous for clearing 4x4 components still end up in the 4x4 components (albeit, the brands notorious for clearing I have also installed with no problems in other builds). Be prepared to torch the collector to get it into a desirable place before you build a y-pipe or send it to the exhaust shop. The long tubes are well worth even the most trouble.
