You don't have to worry about firing order (though you do have it right) and all the complexity of that chart. If you are adjusting valves on any solid lifter engine like the Y block, the more accurate and simple way is the EOIC (Exhaust Open/Intake Closed) method.
Remove the plugs and valve covers. Get a ratchet onto the crank pulley bolt and rotate the engine until the exhaust valve on #1 cylinder is just starting to open. This puts the heel of the cam onto the lifter of the intake valve so you can check and adjust. Then rotate until the intake valve for that cylinder opens all the way and then is just starting to move closed. That puts the heel of the cam onto the lifter of the exhaust valve for that cylinder so you can check/adjust that one. Then just repeat the process for each cylinder. I like to use 0.019" cold.
