In the thread "license plate fighting with bumper" someone told us when federal legislation made all states' license plates the same size and shape.
So yesterday I parked my Tacoma behind a Ford sedan with Delaware plates across the street from my house. The plate looked like an old year of manufacture plate like many of us have on our trucks. It even has a license plate holder with patina.
Another odd thing with that plate....does it expire in June 2026 or June 2028? Both dates are on the sticker near the word 'expires' and since it isn't June 2026 yet, it can't be an 'issued on' date. Locals may know, but if the vehicle is outside the state, who can tell for sure?
That appears to be a private company offering reproduction plates ok'd for use in Delaware with certain restrictions. Why would be a curious question. It's a copy of the style used from 1942-49. The vertical holes on either side of the "DEL" were for the metal date tabs originally used to show expiration, for month/day on the left, year on the right. Obviously they're not using those today but the typical renewal sticker. From the picture in my book, it does appear to be a fairly accurate repro. Interesting.
You can only get one if your number is one that was originally issued in the old style (low numbers, usually 5 digits). I have one on my SS. I’ve seen number 3 on the road before. People sell the lower numbers for thousands of dollars.
I'm pretty sure the "26" number is the county number, Ohio does the exact same thing. My vehicles there have a county sticker, the standard plates have the county name spelled out and get placed across the bottom of the plate. My Marine veteran plates have the county number sticker that goes in an upper corner because the bottom says veteran.
