So I've taken my Doghouse off 2x now on my '88 E350. Both times was always a bear to line up the bolt holes while screwing the bolts in. The passenger side bolt is not OEM. I took the van to get California smogged and although it passed easily, the Smog Tech stripped the passenger side bolt because he was struggling to get the non-standard bolt back in. Now the bolt just spins. I was able to carefully remove the bolt but it will no longer screw in. I thought what a great idea it would be to simply put a Marine Grade Quick Release pin in place of the bolt. Just add a stainless steel washer. What do you all think?
Get 2 new bolts
Pull the carpet or pad back
Weld up the hole in the stripped bolt
Retap the bolt back to 3/8-16 or whatever it was
Had to do that a bunch of times over the years
I also tapped a few to the bigger size (possibly even metric) like they did yours
