351w to 460 swap what would i need

so i found a 460 in good shape for 400 dollars, i currently have a 1988 f250 351w and the transmission is a zf5 4x4 and it has 4.10 lsd rear end. my 351w is currently losing oil pressure at idle and its the main bearings my question is if i did throw the 460 in what would i need the 460 is from a obs which i know is maf and obd2 and im pretty sure its automatic so i dont know if i can use the ecu thats in the truck that its coming out is the swap a good idea or should i refresh my current engine

You're gonna need a transmission with the 460 bellhousing bolt pattern for starters.

No the PCM from an obd2 truck is no good to you.. won't even plug into your harness. The 5.8 engine harness can go on the 7.5.. some wires may need to be lengthened or rerouted but it will work, then you just need a PCM for a 460 truck with a manual or C6 transmission. Your other options are to put a carb on it, rebuild the 5.8 or find another to swap in.

thanks i know i would have to do the harness swap because obd2 is just completely different but are you saying that the senors on this 460 will plug into my ob1 harness and work? thanks for the knowledge on the current harness my instructor told me that wasnt true but i had a feeling it was because i can see where the 460s icm is supposed to be at it even has holes for it, so would the ob2 sensors work on obd1 or should i buy this 460 for something else and find a obd1 engine im still learning about stuff so sorry if i sound dumb

Find a 94-97 truck with a roller 351 and swap it in to your truck after a basic freshen up. Vans are also around with them and low value, especially RVs and conversion vans.

Still learning is fine, but this definitely seems above your current pay grade to pull off.

In your case I would go ahead and put the 460 in there if you can afford another 5 speed that fits the bellhousing pattern of a big block
The trans and motor mounts are the main things you need

The main things are obvious and easy. It's the little things that keep it parked or send the whole thing to the scrapper.

Cooling, exhaust, running down the ecu, mounts, transmission linkage, driveshaft and cross member issues.

As far as I know, NO 460 trucks ever came maf, only ever SD.

If hellbent on a 460 I would find an older one with better flowing heads and carb it. The obs 460 heads flow like crap from the factory. then once its running decent enough look into aftermarket EFI. Personally I would carb it and leave it alone.

Like Hitman said, a roller 351 or 351 rebuild would be the path of least resistance. Personally you're looking at a rebuild either way. Just get a roller 351 and stroke it out to 408 and call it a day.

When I pulled the 5.8/ZF5 (formerly an M5OD) BW1356 from my late son's '95 F150 4x4and installed a carb'd 472/ZF5/BW4407, I redid the entire fuel system, including installing a Pollack fuel diverter and a Carter hp4600 fuel pump, the diverter valve required a reversal at rest relay bank but the diverter and fuel tank sending units use the dash mounted selector switch and performs just like factory . I also installed a Duraspark distributor that triggers a 5 pin HEI module and a TFI coil. I was able to pin out the 42 pin bulk head connector to use only what I needed and kept the 5.8's ICM (oil pressure, water temp, A/C compressor coil and hi/lo switches) got rid of about half maybe more of the wiring. I wired in a relay/fuse bank for the aftermarket fuel pump, electric cooling fans/controllers and the diverter valve relays. Finding a key on when cranking and starting source was the first move, I could then fuse that source and then send it to a relay to control multiple things while still being protected. Running vid: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/a...1&d=1772832622 hope this link works

'96-97 7.5s over 8500GVW with Calif Emissions were MAF/OBD2. All Federal emissions 7.5L were Speed Density

1996-97 7.5L CA Emissions were used by California, New York and Massachusetts, as well as many 'fleet' or upfitted vehicles since Ford would have no way of knowing where an ambulance, rental vehicle, or other would be sold. There were many parts for CA-emissions that were unique and are extremely hard to find 30 years later!

What harness swap? Conanski already said that you would be using the (351W) harness already in the truck. Where the ICM is supposed to be?

As already mentioned, a completely different transmission than the one currently in the truck. A lot of things the OP seems to be glossing over.

Huh?

I’d take a MAF 460 over a SD any day of the week.
