Vehicle was running and driving just fine. Shut it off after driving it about 6 miles. Was in the business about 15 minutes. Went to start it, didn't want to start, but finally did and barely ran and ran terrible, looked and check emissions message was on, drove it a few blocks and it died once and restarted it, ran terrible so I parked it. Any ideas?

Are you sure it was "Check Emissions" message? Where did that appear?
Regardless, there should be a diagnostic code stored that would likely provide better insight into what's possibly the issue. Do you have access to a scan tool or code reader? Often times chain auto parts stores will offer the service at no charge, but you probably need to get the Escape to them in order to get the codes read.
It might be as simple as a coil or two that have failed, a bad connection somewhere, broken vacuum line, etc. but knowing the diagnostic code or codes should help.
The emissions message was in a small window left of the steering. It's the same window where the oil life or change oil message comes in. I will need to get it where I can get the code read. Thanks for the reply!

I just installed a new coolant temperature sensor on my 2012 Escape 3.0 V6 (flex fuel, runs on ethanol), and the 'check engine' light went away (after disconnecting the battery to reboot the computers), but it is still failing CA smog inspection. The tech says he's still getting the 'bad thermostat' code, but there is nothing wrong with the cooling system. I was told to drive the vehicle up to 15x from a cold start to freeway temps before returning for a retest (which sounds ridiculous). Do you know (the pro who responded to your problem) if this could be the thermostat being stuck open? Or is it the computer (or sensor)? Because the vehicle runs like a top and stays below half way to hot even during stop-and-go driving & on the freeway so I would really not have to do any repairs. Even if replacing the thermostat is a simple job I've done many times. Do I really need to do all that driving on the freeway (and waste all that time & gas)? Or just replace the thermostat and see if that works?
