Semi official Virginia 2026 thread

Good morning guys.

Not sure how I missed the last couple of days. Could have sworn I've said good morning and complained about the weather forecasts as well as mentioned visiting the boys, etc. Not sure where it went/what happened to it.

Anyway, last forecast I looked at mentioned slight chance of rain/snow this afternoon with a cool down. Next week is supposed to get nicer every day with low 60's by the end of the week.

Got out there yesterday and dug back into the Santa Fe rear hatch issue my sister in law is having. The work to replace the switch started Thursday and was halted when they couldn't get the plastic body piece off to get access to the switch/wiring. She called a local shop she does business with and they told her it would have to have all the pieces put back on it before they'd look at it and labor costs would be upwards of $500 plus the cost of the switch from Hyundai. Wow. I got out there yesterday and spent almost three hours getting it apart. Might be a great way to put something together at the factory but it's a really crappy way to put something together someone might have to work on some day. Won't go into all the details but most of the clips were destroyed getting them out. The switch doesn't plug into the wiring harness. It's wired right into the plug for everything in the hatch and the wires have to be cut and then crimp connectors are used to install the new switch. They put enough wiring on the license plate lights to pull them out and replace the bulbs but not enough wire on the hatch switch to pull it out and replace the switch. You have to take an exterior plastic panel off to get access to the switch and wiring. The clips have two "catches" on them and they're oriented so you can only reach one catch with a screw driver so the second catch breaks off when you push the clip back through the steel hatch shell. Access to push them out is limited to a big common screw driver almost 18" long to reach them from the openings on the inside of the hatch metal shell. Luckily you can get the same clips off Amazon and they even come in a 10 pack size to replace every one of the clips. The parts should be in Monday and I expect a much quicker reinstall time than almost 3 hours. I tried three different methods of reaching both catches on the clips and only the big screw driver would reach the ones pretty far from the openings and the bent clip/panel removal tools had too much bend in the shaft for the 1.5" of clearance between the walls in the steel hatch panel. No doubt they have some special tool for that job or they just break them up, too, and replace the clips each time they replace a switch. I do not enjoy working on cars/trucks as much as I used to.

Evan, here's a picture of some Marines (seems I remember reading these were from one of the early Marine Recon units because of the camoflage (dropped later due to issues with identifying friend from foe in the jungle.) This was supposed to be early in the war and I don't remember what island they were on. The guy right in front has an 03 Springfield and I can see one or two more in the group but can't tell if they 03 models or 03A3 models as I can't see the rear sights.

Have a great day guys. Wait, this is the weekend. I get off my count on what day of the week it is. The PT and doctor's appointments have really slowed down and I almost never look at a calendar anymore. And, they send me text messages to let me know of upcoming appointments.

For some reason, we don't have any new calendars in the house. Have to check the phone or TV news to see what day it is.

Good morning guys.

Supposed to be sunny today with highs close to 50. Without wind it'll be pretty nice outside on the south side of the buildings.

My wife got all that turkey leftovers back out of the fridge and heated up and I poured them over a couple handfuls of dog food in the three pans in the dog pen. Holy cow. Bear inhaled his. He was done and the pan dry/clean while Duke still couldn't see the bottom of his pan. Lucky was outside the pen eating his. I made a mistake and tried to put an even amount in each pan and there was no way lucky was going to eat it all. He stopped at least four times to walk away, smell the bushes and take a leak and then came back to eat some more. When he walked away Duke was done and I brought Lucky and his pan in to split it up between them. Then the biscuits and I had to leave to come in and get ready to go to dinner at our youngest son's house. We had cornbread and "smoked" chili with beans. He told us he'd cooked the chili in the smoker. It sure was good. I had a bowl and a half. He makes good iced tea, too.

Church this morning. No plans for the afternoon. I need to remember to go out around 1 PM or so and see how warm the shed is. Might be warm enough to do some reloading preps/steps. This week it'll surely be warm enough out there. On a sunny day with no wind it can be in the mid 60's to low 70's inside. I haven't gotten around to getting a small wood stove for it yet. Hate to spend the money till we see what Christmas and some other stuff is costing us. Did have a good thing happen. Got all my prescriptions refilled before the end of the year so they were still in the period of having met my out of pocket expenses and didn't cost me any money when the insurance paid for them. Sort of like a Christmas present.

Have a great day guys.

Good morning Virginia. 18 and light snow up here to start the day, Jim. Will take at least 2 cups of coffee to figure out what I want to accomplish today.
Might go over to son's house and do some measuring for some projects he's doing.

George, you don't need a calendar for that. It is the Day after Yesterday!

Joyous Sunday morning Virginia, Jim, George, Evan and all the crew. Sunny start to the day but it was 19° at 0730 but now we are at 32° and headed to 39° with nothing wet or white falling.
Today I am home with the Honey and will be playing hooky from Church, but I will watch the Live Stream at 1100.

Have a Blessed day everyone.

Good morning guys.

Looks like another sunny start after several cool cloudy days. Supposed to be a few degrees warmer than yesterday. We'll take it.

Waiting on parts for my sister in laws car. One other thing I've got to look at before I put the thing back together. How to get the license plate lights out and replace them. I took the screws out the other day and could not get either of the lens/lights out and they'd just hang up part way out. I've got to be able to get those bulbs out in case they go bad some day. Now's the time to get that figured out. While the panel is off the car and I don't have to be a contortionist to see the lights and get a screw driver on them.

Went out to the dog pen yesterday and the boys had barely touched the dry food I put in their pans after the turkey soup feast they had Saturday afternoon. We weren't home while it was still daylight to watch them waddle around the pen afterwards. I got to thinking, part way through it, I should have halved it up so I could give them a couple treats this week.

Have a great day. Even if it a Monday.

Merry Monday Virginia, Jim, Evan, George and all the crew.
Jim, yesterday in my woods was partly sunny and a high of 38°. Overnight under clear skies we dropped to 21°, this morning bright warm sun and headed to about 58° as a high.
The dogs do the same but not all at the same time. i.e. yesterday while at home, Dexter the wirehair Doxie ate everything and Fox the reddish smooth coat Doxie wouldn't' eat anything. The Pyrs all seem to take turns eating one day and not the next!
Dogs, who can figure! LOL

Happy New Years everyone!!! As per usual tradition each year, I forget that someone started a new years chat thread and I inevitably post one last message in the old one!!!

Hope everyone's celebration was good fun.

Jim - I've seen that picture before. The guy in the very front definitely has a standard '03, I can tell by the rear sight placement. If it's early war, I would think the majority would be regular '03s, with 03A3s slowly coming into service as we ramp up war production.

Good morning guys.

Rod, the sun was out for less than an hour yesterday morning and then the clouds rolled in and it looked like it could snow the rest of the day. Wasn't cold enough or wet enough to snow but it was dark/cloudy and the clouds just looked like snow clouds. Yesterday morning I knew what today's forecast was but I have no idea of what it will be like today till today is over. Not wasting my time to look at the forecast right now.

Got the parts for the Santa Fe late last night. Didn't look at the clips but the switch looks to be the right one. Might find out later today. The package was supposed to have the crimp connectors in it to wire up the new switch. Nope. Not there. Gotta go find/dig out my old kit and take care of it. Try out/confirm the hatch will open/shut and then put it all back together. That means another crawl through one of the passenger doors into the cargo area to reach that little lever in the hatch and push it to the side to open the hatch. Oh, the fun of that.

Need to make a coupe phone calls this morning. One to the vet to try to set up another appt for Duke. He's got a knot on his tail he's hit something and it's bleeding and his wagging tail just keeps hitting stuff and keeps bleeding. Got it looked at last fall and was supposed to get an estimate phone call for the surgery when we left the vet's office. Never got it and now we need it. Then I have to call my doctor and set up an appt. to get me looked at. Got insurance to cover most of that one.

The ladies are finally having Bible Study again this morning. Missed the last couple of weeks for family goings on. I guess they're ready to get back into the routine.

Evan, I remember reading the Marines used a lot of the Springfields till they started getting the M1 Garands. Can't say which models other than the Marine sniper rifles were 03 Springfields modified for scope mounts and scopes while the Army sniper rifles were the 03A4's that were made for mounts and scopes from the factory. I don't when the M1C and M1D Garands started showing up. I had a great uncle (grandma's brother) that I showed my 03A4 to back in 1978 or so. His eyes lit up, he grabbed it, worked the bolt, put it up to his shoulder and then told me that he'd carried/used on in Korea. He said he an his buddy alternated with it. One day he carried the sniper rifle and his buddy carried an M1 Garand and the next day they'd switch up and he'd have his M1 Garand. One of his son's had a Remington 03 (when they started making them it was the standard 03 model before they got permission to speed up production by using all the stamped (not milled) parts used in the 03A3 models. I remember reading the 03A2 models were a stockless version used as a sub caliber device in some artillery pieces. They used it to train soldiers by firing a .30-06 cartridge in the artillery piece vs. the standard/big cannon shells. We used a similar device when they trained us on the 90 MM recoiless rifles in AIT. Only those used the same ammo (7.62X51) the M14 rifle and M60 machine gun used. I still remember the "loader" (two man team) smacking me on the helmet to let me know he'd loaded the round and the "rifle" was ready to fire. We shot them at paper targets for the training sessions. Never saw/used one again after that. The Army was going to the anti tank missiles (TOW, Dragon, etc) at that time and the old recoiless rifles were museum pieces or crushed/chopped up for scrap.

Have a great day guys.

Good morning guys.

Supposed to be a warm but windy day here. Yesterday wasn't too bad. Spent most of the day on the phone trying to get a couple things done. Still no resolution on the goofy phone message I got the other day. Did confirm it was from the imaging center at the hospital but calling them a couple times got me no where except a request to wait and call back later after I'd been on hold and talking to a scheduling rep for almost 1.5 hours. I didn't get the opportunity to call back yesterday. I hope to remember today, after I get back from my other appt. this morning (leaving the house in about 35 minutes.) Got Duke an appt for tomorrow morning at 9 AM for that knot on his tail.

Finally got outside, late, yesterday afternoon to take a look at getting the Santa Fe back together and then couldn't find either one of my crimp/connector kits. I did find my butterfly drill bits right there in the big tool box where I put them at one time or another. Didn't fine those a couple weeks ago when I needed them. Might get that job done in the next couple of days.

Basketball tournament games starting tomorrow. Still haven't gotten any times yet.

Have a great day.

Jim, "what you are looking for , will be found in the last place you look" That's one reason why I've ended up with a lot of duplicates. Still not completely unpacked from moving
back from Virginia. Wife says she brought back a Mr.Coffee but, we have yet to find it. Way to many sealed boxes.

That's a pretty neat story, Jim. I knew they used Springfields for a good long while, didn't realize they used them that long. If I was a mean fella and wanted to make a crack at your age, I'd ask if that's what you were issued back in the day . Of course, I'd never tease somebody like that!!!

Would those have been M67 recoilless rifles? I saw a smorgasbord of recoilless rifles at some or other museum - not sure if that's one of the ones I saw or not. Always wondered what it was like to be behind one of those in action.....

George - that's become one of my favorite sayings, much to the chagrin of my friends and family. It's very true, always the last place you look.

Have a good one guys - we made it halfway through so far.
