I just bought a F350 cab and chassis with a dump body. I intend to use it to haul materials all summer and as a plow rig all winter. Intending to mount a 9 ft plow so it is wide enough to clear the duals when angled.
I used it for the first time yesterday to help un-stick a stuck loader tractor and I was a little unimpressed with the traction it had, even in 4WD. Getting it into my shed in 2wd was a non starter.
now, it was slick with wet ice everywhere but it has me nervous about how it might do as a plow rig.
the easiest and cheapest mod would be a lock right or similar type locker. They work but are not without compromise. I’m not worried about noise, but I’m concerned about durability for a heavy hauler. I expect to use the truck to the capacity of the tires, and the empty weight is nearly 9300 lbs (the dump body is stupid heavy, apparently, because the empty weight should only be a little over 6100 lbs).
is this type of locker worth considering, or is it a bad idea for something doing heavy work?
It should work fine, usually the carrier fails or the teeth on the ring gear strip before the locker does. I know a guy that had one in a Jeep and accidentally put it in reverse while going about 30 MPH. He had to get a new ring and pinion and carrier but the locker was fine.
