Valvoline Restore and Protect

Has anyone tried this oil with success in a 7.3 Godzilla? Maybe helps with the cam/lifter issues? Looking for an oil to run long term in my 26’.

I personally wouldn't use it on a new port injected engine and it will not provide better protection for cam/lifters.

Valvoline products consistently yield some of the best (lowest) wear metals per 1000 miles of anything out there. They make great oils without all the hype surrounding boutique oils and usually beat Mobil/Exxon oils. Restore and protect is a great oil even if your engine is new. I'm running the Valvoline synthetic high mileage in my Godzilla because of the high moly they put in it relative to their other products.

I’ve heard about the high mileage in a 7.3 and it ‘likes it’ from researching. Could you tell a difference in smoothness after you switched?

No. I honestly don't think anyone can "tell" by feel. It's meets ford's spec and real world UOAs tell me what I need to know.

Either you'll have "good" cam/lifter or you'll have "crap" cam/lifter. Pick what flavor of oil and enjoy the truck.

The Valvoline Restore and Protect has a special cleaning additive to keep internals clean and carbon buildup especially around ring groves which is a common problem with Direct Injected engines. Your 7.3 is Port Injected so carbon build up is not an issue. I personally like Mobil 1 both regular and EP versions and Motorcraft synthetic blend oils. Either one will get you an easy +200k miles.

I use it based on Lake Speed’s analysis of the oil and protection it offers. Direct Injection or not, carbon still builds up on rings from the combustion process in any engine.

That’s exactly where I heard from it from; it seems like all trucks have a “favorite” oil that owners use. For instance, in a Hemi, we used red line, and it would drastically change the engine smoothness and cam lob failure due to cylinder deactivation. Literally the audible tone of the engine running would change (for the better). I have yet to find that favorite oil in all my research so far.

Guess I’m old and not into oil analysis. Regardless of one’s opinion, there is no magic mechanic in a bottle.

I use Wally Supertech, have for 60k hard miles. No issues. Cost me 46-48 bucks with filter. So, run a $35 dollar scan and see about how much longer you can go or just swap that old stuff again with fresh and not ponder.

Want to see oils stressed, try a 10.5:1 air cooled twin cam. We regularly see oil temps above 260, on hot days over 300 is possible.

For our cars and trucks, it’s a supertech world. We have a ranger (2.3) in the family with over 600k, no internal work besides the timing belt. It’s entire lifetime we used supertech at 10k intervals. The little beast still makes weekly dump runs.

Valveoline or any other brand will not extend the life of your trucks lifters, when that .600 lift wants to flake it will.

A YT blowhard vs a team of engineers at Ford, hmmm…..

You sure are giving those engineers a lot of credit. Acting like they have no limitations in their work. Shareholders are #1 not customers. More money goes into figuring out how to maximize their dividend than what oil you should run at what intervals.

Those same engineers specified Ford gold coolant for the 6.0 diesel. How did that work out?

My dad has run Supertech oil in his vehicles for hundreds of thousands of miles. Supertech filters too. Never a single issue.

I bounce between regular Valvoline or Mobil1. WM is always out of stock on one of them…never fails.
