5.4l 3-valve triton v8, timing chain

I have a 2008 f-150 5.4L with 230000 miles and I think the timing chain is starting to get loose, it sounded pretty bad while pulling a trailer but hardly noticeable without it. Also the oil was about half on the dipstick I topped it off and that seemed to make it better, I can't hear it now.
I already called two mechanics and without looking at it they both said that I would need a new engine.
I was wondering if there is any good way to prolong the engine life? I don't have money for a new engine right now
Any suggestions are welcome

I replaced the timing chain assy, oil pump, and timing cover a few years ago on my son's 3 valve F150. The guides broke apart, and the timing chain wore a hole in the timing cover. Had to drop the oil pan and clean out all that stuff along with the oil pickup tube. Also replaced both oil pressure chain tensioners too. I did all the work in my driveway. The truck ran great afterwards but the only thing that concern me was all the aluminum in the oil. If your timing cover doesn't show any wear from the chains ?

The "you need a new engine" is a knee-jerk response as soon as they hear it's a Ford 4.6L/5.4L 3v.
Most of this is because the majority of mechanics don't want to touch it with a 10ft torque wrench.
As Racing Jake pointed out, you CAN do this yourself if you have attention to detail & a descent amount of grease in your blood.
It is time consuming & frustrating, but very doable with only a few specialty tools.
I would recommend using ONLY Ford Motorcraft parts with the exception of a Melling HV oil pump.
If you have never been into the engine, you should count on dropping the oil pan.
You CAN replace the oil pump without dropping it, but it makes it way easier if you do.
Not to mention, I am sure there will be plenty of debris (usually from the guides) in the pan & pickup that needs to be cleaned out.

I dunno about that. A 230K mile engine is iffy. Said engine with timing chain cover shrapnel floating through the engine? I wouldn’t chance a quickie repair on that. But, I’m not in that spot and I’d like that repair be a one and done job.

OP, just drive it until it goes. I’d hate to do that job again with all the wear these 3V engines rack up once the timing guides end up being friendly with the oil pump pickup.
