Wiggle room for EV Tax Credit that ends 9/30/25
The EV tax credit ends 9/30/25— but there’s a little bit of wiggle room for car buyers - NPR
"But this week the IRS clarified that the deadline has a little bit of flexibility. Specifically, as long as a shopper enters a binding contract to buy a vehicle before Sept. 30, the purchase can qualify for the tax credit — even if the car isn't actually delivered until later"
If buying or ordering a Lightning you must also verify that the individual VIN number qualifies. Not all Lightnings qualify possibly because of the specific sourcing of battery components. The dealer will be able to verify that a particular Lightning VIN number qualifies or not, prior to purchasing

Another not well known fact about the Tax credit is if the MSRP is over $80,000 it does not qualify for the credit, BUT there is a work around.
And for people who choose to lease rather than buy, $7,500 can be put toward the lease of any EV, without restrictions on price, manufacturing location or buyer income — a loophole that has pleased many automakers and frustrated many EV tax credit critics.
That is how I got such huge deal on a Platinum Lightning. I intended to lease it and pay it off in a week. But when they offered 0% financing on a lease I decided to just kept the lease and invest the money.
If you are on the fence look into making a deal before 9/30

Thanks for sharing this! It’s good to know there’s some flexibility with the EV tax credit deadline. I hadn’t realized that a binding contract before 9/30 could still make you eligible even if delivery happens later.
Also, the note about checking the VIN for a Lightning is really helpful — I didn’t realize not all of them would qualify. Definitely something to verify with the dealer before committing.
