CPP Power steering mated to 77 F250 Column question
Truck in question is a 62 F100 short box uni (in process of restoration, 460/c6 is mocked in)
I've been in communication with CPP regarding using their 57-60 power steering box and the tech guy said the box couldn't be clocked to where I could combine their rag joint with the rag joint on my 77 column, maybe he is right?? From the picture of their P/S box and looking at the stock box angle it appears that my idea to combine rag joints should work.
Additional question, the tech guy said to use a Saginaw P/S pump, my eyes identify the pump that came with the engine as a Saginaw, am I correct?
Any readers out their that have done a similar swap....what was your experience.
Yes , that is a Saginaw pump.... I can't help with the CCP box, determined early in my build, I couldn't fit the CCP box with a Cummins. Personally I'd sure give it a shot, stranger things have fit with minimal fuss.
thanks for your response, I appreciate your feedback.
you stepped into an area (with a diesel) that I'd be uncomfortable with having never even owned a diesel anything
I take that back, over ten years ago I traded pickups ( a 2003 F 150 for a new 2011 F150) They didn't have it ready and wanted mine right away, they have me a crew cab F350 Diesel to pull my RV. I did like it that's the only time I got any diesel experience
Used 6BT Cummins and Allison 545AT from a 1994 F700. Used every thing from the intercooler to the drive shaft. Unfortunately the starter postIion and aCCP box can't share the same space.
I have a 62 uniy also I put in the cpp but put in a 30" Ididit tilt column it required a 3/4 DD for the box and the same on column but I went with a universal as mounting the cpp with their plate it offset the connection by bout 1/2". Easiest way to describe as you are in cab look down where column goes thru and mine is not centered it is offset actually3/8". Nervous about it I got everything hooked up had to raise front of floor and just turned wheel to both stops it was fluid so I'll find out when get engine reinstalled and can start it. I never figured the Saginaw pump thing but like you thats what I had guess anything else is to much volume. Good luck wow a 460 I just rebuilt a 302 and got my AOD back and installing that.
thanks for your reply and input. I assume the aftermarket column was DD. If I understand you the bracket moved the steering splined joint about a half inch or so towards the center of the vehicle? Did you fee with the misalignment thatl there wasn't enough "flex" do do a rag joint?
When I talked to the tech he said that if the stock steering box cleared the engine/exhaust manifold then the CPP box would also. The 77 F250 that provided the engine/transmission also provided the steering column, since the 62 came with "three on the tree" and I wanted an automatic on the column I hope this works out well, I was hoping that I could "mingle" the rag joint with the CPP supplied rag joint but the tech guy didn't think it would work..
I may have to cut off the end of the column and do a weld on Borgeson joint. I did that on a Track T roadster (I actually made a hybrid column using a 58 Pontiac upper and 57/58? Studebaker lower portion since the Pontiac transmission lever was huge and I had no room for it. In that case it was a SBC/T350 transmission.
