Improving Accelleration F550 Godzilla

Hi Gang.
Recently I put a modified F550 7.3L Godzilla gasser on the road. Its sole purpose is as conveyance for our truck camper. We live in it 6 months out of the year, and have been doing this for the last 10 years, going from mountain biking area to mountain biking area, boondocking nearby. I've had TC's on a F250, and in a F350. Always gassers. Our current rig was modified by EOG in Denver to have supersingles and a liguidspring suspension. Utility bed by Bowen Customs, and a Bigfoot 2500 10-4. I'm 3000lb underweight.
I'm really disappointed in the acceleration of this rig.
Looking at options.
  • Aftermarket throttle tuner?
  • Aftermarket turbo?
What are your thoughts and experiences, and of course I'm concerned with overloading engine components or drive train with added torque. I'm a total noob to tis kind of engine mod, so need some "edjumication"
Guide me, oh wise ones.

Call 5-star tuning and see if they can use lock the F550. The 7.3L in cab & chassis are rated at lower HP and TQ than the pickup versions.

It's a 4.88. Is what t is, wondering what might be a solution...given my gearing.

Thanks. And I'm currently upon the Mogolon Rim just a few hours from Phoenix. Will call tomorrow, s it's after hours now, but they don't show availability on their website. Other ideas?

I'm not sure what kind acceleration you are experiencing or looking for, but the post makes me think of others such as
"I just went from an F150 to a F250. Boy, is the ride horrible. What am I do to improve the ride?"
"I just went from an F150 ecoboost to an F250 7.3 gas. Boy, the gas mileage is horrible. What can I do to get better mileage?"

It's a huge, heavy truck with large heavy tires and wheels. It is not going to accelerate well unless it is driven off a cliff. A tune or Pedal Monster may improve throttle response feel but may not make a noticeable difference in 0 to 60 time.

BTW, that's a nice looking rig.

Thanks. Still curious if there is a move I might make, however.

What size tires are on it? Taller than stock tires effectively raise (lower numerically) the gear ratio thus reducing loaded performance.

I think most of the super single installs go with 40-42” tires.
I would hope that they swap out the stock gearing for whatever works best for that set up.
Pretty sure going that big on tires you also have max speed limitations.

My buddy who has a larger Eagle Cap camper recently purchased a new Dodge Ram 550 series truck without the bed and directly mounted the camper on a new flatbed and added boxes for storage and he says it works great, no complaints on power at all.
All stock as far as suspension and DRW.

Call the shop where you got the install you’ll get it sorted.

I'm pretty sure the gasser F550 is not derated like the diesel if you still have the stock gearing that's a lot of the problem. I wouldn't go to crazy with turbos or supper chargers you will start having or heating problems at slow speeds in hot weather. But there are a lot of company's making big power with those engines.

Pedal Commander

Hi. EOG owner here but I have the 6.7 diesel and duals on DDC wheels. However a very good friend of mine has a 22 F550, 84" CA, EOG built rig with super singles and Liquid Spring carrying an Eagle Cap camper. He too considered a Whipple supercharger and other mods. He bought a Pedal Commander and is very happy with it. He says it takes all the 'dead pedal' out of it. I haven't heard any more from him about other mods since then.
You might give that a try. Comparatively inexpensive and you can easily remove it if you don't like it.

It heavy. What’s does it weigh fully loaded, 15,000?
Then throw in some elevation and your 475 ft.lb. of torque is probably down to 400ft.lbs. Where a diesel will still be at still be at 1000 ft.lbs. because of the turbo charger.

A pedal tuner is just going to change the opening speed of the throttle butterfly, it’s not going to make more power. A chip is going to do what on a NA gas motor? Maybe 20 more ft lbs of torque if that.

Your going to need boost to even maintain your 475 ft.lb rating at any elevation above sea level and boost is going to help at lower RPM’s.
