Hello, back in November of last year I had experienced low power issues with my 7.3. Upon investigation I found that the fuel bowl was gummed up with rust and sediment below the bowl heater. I also found that the small round FPR screen on the side of the fuel bowl was gummed up with the same rust and sediment. Truck had low power and would shake especially in reverse for some reason. After I cleaned the screen and sucked the remaining crap out of the bowl, truck had more power and no longer shook in reverse. However, the truck still seemed to have reduced power when going uphill. I parked the truck for the winter and am starting to tear back into it now.
I was wondering if anyone could explain to me how the Fuel pressure Regulator works and how that screen would affect performance? My understanding would be that if the screen was clogged the fuel rails would have higher pressure and the truck would not have reduced power. My truck was not blowing black smoke out the exhaust signaling a rich running condition or anything like that. I did blow back the line from the lift pump to the bowl. Would that have been what increased my performance instead of the return screen? I am just confused as to how the regulator return screen being clogged would reduce my fuel pressure.
