Hello, my name is Jim, first time on the diesel forum, usually on the mid sixties trucks forum. About to my wits end on my 2012 ford f-250 SD 6.7 with just under 100,000 miles. Had it into the shop early November for EGR cooler replacement for the second time sine I bought the truck new in 2012. In process of changing egr cooler replacement the tech broke the return diesel fuel line, among other items that broke. Shop did replace the fuel line and the others and after 3 weeks i got my truck back. At that point it had a good diesel fuel smell in my cab and basically said it would go away. Next day found a puddle of diesel fuel on and under front differential. Took back to shop they found a leak on the new return line they replaced and repaired it with parts from the old line. Got truck back, still has smell in cab of diesel fuel which has not gone away as of today, in fact at a stop light it stinks strong. I now have a hesitation on occasion with no codes being thrown, the first hesitation was like loss of power and like real bad noisy lifters after 30 seconds gone truck quieter and runs like it should. Only had that happen twice now its just a moments loss of power. Back it went to shop, Forman said the clatter was a injector cause was air in line. He could not get the truck to do what I describe but does smell what he calls diesel exhaust smell. I’ve said not exhaust but fuel smell. They claim there is no leaks. Just did it twice today and I let them know. Any thoughts from you all on the issue before I schedule an appointment at dealership to see what they can find. Thank you in advance! By the way this shop did my first EGR cooler replacement 6 years ago with no issues what so ever, but that tech moved on.
I would try mixing a solution of maybe citrus degreaser and giving the engine/ black insulation a bath or 2 before dealing with a bonehead dealership person again. That black shield is insulated and might of got a really good soaking.
When I had my turbocharger replaced and the CP4 replaced with the DCR there was fuel smell for a couple weeks but it's gone now.
you have had 2 egr replacements.....something is flooding your egr with soot....there could be a relationship to your current supposedly fuel problem.....in other words...the prior egr replacements never really addressed the root cuase which is what you are chasing now. a good shop would analyze existing and stored codes......theres no point trying to get "forum diagnostics " to bring that info to the shop and prescribe repairs. your soot cannon thats clogging your egr's could be a dozen different things from map and ebp sensors to worn injectors. let the techs do their jobs. unfortunately, the 6.7 has a high labor repair costs and the parts are expensive.
Thank you for your reply. I thought this was somewhat normal maintenance since others I know with 6.7 have same issue. Plan on scheduling it at our local Ford shop to have them look at it and will talk about your suggestions.
